Hiwin supply deal with Semes points to deeper access in South Korea's memory equipment market

Hiwin Technologies has signed a supply contract with Semes, Samsung Electronics' semiconductor equipment arm, for a single-axis positioning stage being tested in hybrid bonding equipment, signaling a potential opening in South Korea's advanced packaging supply chain. The deal complements Hiwin's push to broaden its co-packaged optics (CPO) business and move into higher-value semiconductor equipment components.
Hybrid bonding test opens a possible growth path
According to supply chain sources, Semes and Hiwin have worked together for years, with Hiwin previously supplying products including linear guideways and ball screws. The single-axis stage is now undergoing testing in Semes' hybrid bonding equipment.
The current application is still limited in scale, but industry observers say the opportunity could expand as hybrid bonding becomes more important in advanced packaging. A single-axis stage handles precision movement and positioning along one axis, working with other motion-control modules to deliver the high-accuracy operations semiconductor systems require.
Hybrid bonding demands extremely tight alignment between wafers or dies, which means the positioning platform inside the equipment must combine precision, stability, and cleanroom compatibility. Semes is also moving to accelerate mass production of direct die-to-wafer hybrid bonding equipment for high-bandwidth memory (HBM).
South Korean media reported in July 2026 that Semes had completed development earlier in the year and delivered the equipment to Samsung for performance validation, with installation planned for Samsung's new HBM hybrid bonding line at its Pyeongtaek campus. Doh Hyun-ho, head of the Semes Research Institute, said in June 2026 that hybrid bonding equipment is expected to see wider adoption after the HBM5 generation.
For Hiwin, hybrid bonding-related orders are likely to contribute only limited near-term revenue. However, successful validation by South Korean equipment makers could lead to larger orders over the medium to long term, while also helping Hiwin replicate the same products and technology with other customers. The company is also reportedly in talks with Hanmi Semiconductor on a supply partnership.
South Korea operations give Hiwin more room to expand
A Hiwin representative said the company has built a local team of more than 70 people, along with manufacturing facilities in South Korea, enabling it to supply products ranging from ball screws and linear guideways to motors, controllers, and robot arms. That wider product base allows the company to offer subsystem solutions rather than only individual components.
The local factory also gives Hiwin more flexibility on pricing and delivery times, while stronger customization capabilities help build customer trust, the representative said. These advantages may matter as semiconductor equipment makers increasingly seek suppliers that can respond quickly to technical requirements and production schedules.
Hiwin's South Korean operation generated about KRW15.35 billion (approx. US$11.5 million) in revenue in 2025, and the company is targeting KRW25 billion in 2026 and KRW40 billion by 2030. South Korea currently contributes only about 1% to 2% of group revenue, but Hiwin plans to increase that share by adding new products and subsystem offerings.
Beyond semiconductor equipment, robotics is another growth area for Hiwin in South Korea. As the robotics market expands, the company's harmonic reducers have already generated meaningful shipments, and it is working with local partners to expand its presence in the Boston Dynamics supply chain.
