AI server PMIC demand drives spillover orders for Taiwan chip designers

Taiwanese power management IC (PMIC) design houses have been expanding into new applications and broadening their product portfolios in recent years, aiming to move beyond consumer electronics into higher-spec, more stable markets as the AI boom accelerates.

Cloud AI is currently the hottest source of demand, but it remains difficult for Taiwan's smaller design firms to break into. At the same time, the sheer scale of cloud AI demand is pushing global leaders to give up certain application segments over profitability and capacity-allocation concerns, creating spillover orders that Taiwanese IC design companies are actively pursuing.
Based on revenue forecasts from major integrated device manufacturer (IDM) players for their cloud AI-related PMIC and other analog chip businesses, revenue is set to rise sharply between 2026 and 2028. However, IDM giants are unlikely to expand capacity fast enough to keep pace, and securing foundry support from outside partners is also extremely difficult, as PMIC products have already taken up substantial capacity at both 8-inch and 12-inch processes.
Under these conditions, leading vendors are expected to release orders in application areas with lower margins or more complex specifications. According to market information, generic servers are already seeing new entrants, while automotive and industrial control applications are also opening up more opportunities.
From consumer electronics to new markets
Taiwanese PMIC makers, including Global Mixed-mode Technology, ANPEC Electronics, Leadtrend, and uPI Semi, still rely mainly on consumer applications, but they have also begun making inroads into these new segments, even though their revenue contributions remain relatively small at this stage.
A Taiwan PMIC design house said that small and mid-sized players have always had to be highly selective about orders and business lines, given that they cannot compete head-on with IDM giants that own their own capacity.
For now, cloud AI servers are essentially the battleground for IDM giants. For Taiwan's PMIC vendors, the strategy is to focus on peripheral components and channel more resources into areas these large players cannot fully cover, such as generic servers.
While international majors may still dominate main power components, opportunities for peripheral chips remain abundant, especially in lower- and mid-spec product lines, which are likely to be among the first areas to generate a large wave of spillover orders.
Even so, whether this spillover of orders can become a long-term growth driver for Taiwanese PMIC vendors remains to be seen.
On one hand, the outlook depends on how long the current wave of cloud AI buildout lasts and whether major players cut capital expenditure in the future. If the adjustment is significant and demand turns down sharply, those large firms could leverage their in-house capacity and cost advantages to reclaim the orders they had previously abandoned.
On the other hand, developments in China will also matter. As 12-inch mature-process capacity continues to come online there, Chinese PMIC vendors could likewise use low-price competition to target these new niche markets, provided their technology reaches the required standard.
Still, for Taiwanese PMIC companies, using this window to transform and expand their business lines remains a necessary strategy. Even if AI eventually spreads to the edge, mainstream consumer electronics no longer offer clear growth potential, making it essential to seek expansion through new applications.
