China's OLED expansion narrows South Korea's auto, IT panel lead

China's OLED supply push is gathering pace, with BOE Technology Group (BOE), TCL China Star Optoelectronic Technology and Visionox rapidly expanding production and closing in on South Korean rivals. South Korean companies still hold an edge in OLED for smartphones and TVs, but their room to grow in IT devices and automotive OLEDs is likely to narrow.

According to reports from Chosun Biz , Edaily and others, market researcher Omdia said Chinese panel makers' shipment share in the global automotive display market is expected to rise to 65.2% in the second half of 2026. The figure is based on LCD shipments and is more than double the 28.1% recorded in 2019, meaning their share has more than doubled in seven years.

IT OLED capacity is next in China's sights
Chinese display makers are also rapidly reinvesting profits from their LCD businesses into OLED, and the expansion is not limited to automotive applications. At a South Korean display seminar, Omdia forecast that by 2028, China's 8.6-generation OLED capacity for notebooks and tablets will reach twice South Korea's level.
South Korea still leads in overall OLED capacity for now, but China is expected to overtake it in the fast-growing IT OLED segment. Another market researcher, Counterpoint Research, also expects China's total OLED capacity to surpass South Korea's in 2029.
The overall market gap is shrinking fast
The gap between South Korea and China in the overall OLED market is narrowing quickly. A report from the Overseas Economic Research Institute of the Export-Import Bank of Korea showed South Korea's share of the global OLED market fell from 87.3% in 2020 to 68.7% in 2025, while China's rose from 12.1% to 31.2%. In just five years, the gap shrank from 75.2% to 37.5%.
Omdia expects Chinese makers' OLED factory efficiency to improve sharply over the next two years. Equipment investment costs are typically amortized over about eight years, and China's sixth-generation OLED plants, built around 2020, are expected to finish depreciation by around 2028.
As capital burden eases, Chinese firms will gain more room to cut costs and could further boost price competitiveness in automotive OLEDs.
A US trade ruling adds uncertainty
South Korean media also noted that the market still has variables. In a recent preliminary ruling, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) found that BOE improperly used Samsung Display Co. (SDC)'s trade secrets and ordered a ban on BOE OLED products entering the US for 14 years and 8 months. The preliminary ruling could hinder Chinese companies' entry into US supply chains and add uncertainty to their OLED expansion.
A South Korean display industry source said automotive OLED requires higher standards for reliability and durability, making it difficult for automakers to switch suppliers. But if Chinese makers continue to push low-price shipments, South Korean companies' bargaining power could weaken.
South Korea urged to reinforce its position
The Overseas Economic Research Institute of the Export-Import Bank of Korea urged stronger policy support, including R&D and equipment investment, as Chinese companies accelerate their catch-up in OLED. It said South Korea needs to reinforce the competitiveness of its firms and solidify the foundation for long-term growth.
