Memory prices are rising faster than expected as global AI demand strains DRAM and flash supply, with knock-on effects for PCs, data centers, networking gear, and industrial devices worldwide. Supply-chain sources say third-quarter 2026 contract talks reflect a tighter market, with older chips becoming more expensive.
Prices climbing faster than forecast
According to those sources, memory prices started climbing in the second half of 2025 and kept rising into the third quarter of 2026, even as many buyers had expected the pace to moderate. Some earlier forecasts called for gains of just 10% to 20%, but market participants now say increases could be far larger.
DDR4 8Gb bears the brunt
The sharpest pressure is centered on DDR4 8Gb chips, where supply is said to be extremely tight. Sources say Taiwanese memory makers have told customers that third-quarter DDR4 8Gb contract prices could rise as much as 50% from the second quarter, pushing past previous market ceilings. In some cases, Taiwanese DDR4 quotes are already above Samsung Electronics' prices for the same specification.
Enterprise SSDs are driving the squeeze
The tighter market is being driven in part by enterprise SSD demand tied to AI inference and large data centers. These sources said enterprise SSDs need dedicated DRAM to handle heavy random read and write traffic and reduce latency, with a common configuration of 1GB of DRAM per 1TB of NAND flash. As data-center storage shifts toward 16TB to 30TB, or larger, drives, demand for supporting memory has intensified.
Suppliers are pulling back on DDR4
At the same time, major suppliers have cut DDR4 production. Samsung is said to be serving only a small number of long-term customers, while Micron has begun mass production of DDR4 and LPDDR4 at its Virginia plant to support long-life-cycle markets such as automotive, defense, aerospace, and medical devices.
Legacy chips feel the pinch too
DDR3 prices are also moving higher as customers turn to older-generation chips for networking equipment, televisions, industrial systems, and IoT devices. With Winbond and Nanya shifting capacity toward DDR4, the DDR3 supply has tightened further, helping push legacy memory prices up.
NAND flash tells a similar story
Flash memory is showing a similar pattern. The same sources said SLC NAND prices have more than doubled since the start of 2026, while MLC NAND remains scarce, suggesting continued upward pressure through the second half of 2026.
