Network equipment maker Alpha Networks said it has teamed up with Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and Chen Lung Technology to jointly advance the "B5G/Pre-6G public network Massive Antenna Radio Unit project."
The three parties have already signed the agreement and will co-develop Massive MIMO RU products and related technologies. Alpha Networks will also build advanced measurement labs for millimeter-wave and Sub-6GHz array antennas to strengthen its in-house development capabilities and testing technology for high-end communications equipment.
Traffic growth is pushing base stations to their limits
As mobile communications evolve from 5G toward B5G/Pre-6G, surging demand for high-definition video, vehicle networking, industrial automation and AI services is driving rapid traffic growth, and base stations must now deliver higher transmission performance, spectrum efficiency and signal coverage.
However, Taiwan's telecom public network still relies heavily on products from international vendors for high-end base stations, making the buildout of indigenous technology and a complete supply chain a key issue for the island's communications industry.
What the technology will do
The project will integrate key technologies including large antenna arrays, wideband RF transceivers, 3D beamforming and multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO), enabling signals to be transmitted quickly and precisely to where they are needed while serving more users at the same time.
Alpha Networks said the technologies are expected to be used in public networks in urban areas, smart transportation, large venues, transportation hubs, campuses and enterprise private networks.
Beyond improving user connectivity, the project will use standardized Open RAN fronthaul interfaces to improve interoperability between RU and distributed units (DU) from different vendors, reducing the integration limits of closed systems.
Telecom operators will be able to flexibly choose equipment, expand networks and upgrade functions based on demand, speeding up the rollout of new technologies and services. The Massive MIMO RU developed under the project will also play a key RF transmission role in future AI-RAN architectures.
Building Taiwan's own supply chain
Alpha Networks said it hopes the industry-academia collaboration will further connect domestic chips, communications components and systems integration industries, gradually building Taiwan's in-house development capability for B5G/Pre-6G advanced communications equipment and enhancing the global competitiveness of Taiwan's communications industry.
