BYD weighs US$1B car-carrier order to support surging EV exports

BYD is extending its global expansion beyond factories and sales networks into ocean transport, building greater control over the car-carrier capacity needed to support rapidly rising overseas electric vehicle exports.

Guangzhou Shipyard International, a unit of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), recently secured an order for 10 LNG dual-fuel pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs), each capable of carrying 8,200 vehicles. The contract is worth more than US$1 billion, prompting speculation that BYD, an existing major customer, could be the buyer.
China CSSC Holdings said Guangzhou Shipyard International and China Shipbuilding Trading signed the contract on September 1 with an unnamed "well-known shipowner." The 10 vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2029 and 2031.
Securities Times described the deal as one of the larger single orders in the global car-carrier market in recent years. Eworldship reported that the contract exceeds US$1 billion and that Guangzhou Shipyard International has withheld further details under an agreement with the shipowner.
BYD's continued expansion of its own car-carrier fleet has made it a closely watched potential buyer, although there has been no official confirmation. If BYD is ultimately identified as the customer, the order would significantly expand its in-house shipping capacity and deepen its vertical integration across the global automotive supply chain.
That strategy is being reinforced by surging overseas sales. BYD exported a record 180,538 new-energy vehicles in July 2026. Total sales exceeded 2.227 million vehicles in the first seven months of the year, with overseas markets providing an increasingly important source of growth.
The momentum accelerated in August. BYD sold 440,293 new-energy vehicles worldwide, up 17.8% year-on-year, while overseas shipments jumped 134.5% to 189,466 units, or about 43% of monthly sales. Rising export volumes are making dedicated car-carrier capacity increasingly important to the company's global distribution network.
BYD has already established its own shipping fleet. The BYD Zhengzhou, delivered in July 2025, was the second 7,000-vehicle LNG dual-fuel car carrier built by Guangzhou Shipyard International for the automaker. The first, the BYD Hefei, was delivered and entered service in January 2025. BYD Group is the direct owner of both ships.
The company also operates the BYD Shenzhen, a purpose-built car carrier with 9,200 standard vehicle spaces. BYD has described it as one of the world's largest car carriers in operation by vehicle capacity, supporting global deliveries of its new-energy vehicles.
BYD's fleet expansion reflects supply-chain vertical integration rather than a simple move into shipping. Chinese automakers have traditionally relied on third-party carriers, but rapidly rising new-energy vehicle exports have increased exposure to vessel availability, sailing schedules, freight rates, and geopolitical disruption, including risks in the Red Sea.
Owning part of its transport capacity gives BYD greater control over export costs, delivery schedules, and overseas deployment while reducing dependence on external shipowners.
