Meta reportedly taps SeeYA for Phoenix OLEDoS panels as BOE fails to qualify

Meta has reportedly tapped Chinese microdisplay maker SeeYA Technology to supply OLED-on-silicon (OLEDoS) panels for its next-generation lightweight mixed-reality headset, codenamed Phoenix, while rival BOE failed to obtain supplier qualification, according to South Korea's The Elec .

SeeYA began mass production of the Phoenix panels in May and had shipped about 1 million panels as of late August. The report cited a Chinese microdisplay industry source who said the information came directly from a SeeYA contact. Each headset is expected to use two 0.91-inch panels, one for each eye, with a resolution of 2,560×2,560. SeeYA developed the panel under the internal project name ONNA1.
Neither SeeYA nor BOE has formally confirmed the reported supplier decision. Contacted by Chinese financial outlet Caiwen, SeeYA's securities department said cooperation with customers across industries is proceeding according to plan and that disclosures would comply with Shanghai Stock Exchange rules and customer agreements. BOE said it does not comment on individual customer information. The reason BOE reportedly failed to qualify remains unknown.
SeeYA gains early lead in Meta's OLEDoS supply chain
Separately, SeeYA's IPO prospectus points to a sharp increase in orders from an unnamed XR customer. The company said the customer had locked in capacity for several million silicon-based OLED microdisplays annually from 2026, with purchases expected to reach several million units in each of 2026 and 2027. SeeYA said the customer could account for more than 70% of its revenue in 2026, underscoring both the scale of the opportunity and the concentration risk. The filing did not identify the customer, and there is no confirmation that it is Meta.
If the reported sourcing decision holds, Phoenix would mark the first time Meta uses OLEDoS in a commercially sold device. Meta used glass-substrate OLED displays in the original Oculus Rift and first-generation Quest before shifting later Quest devices to lower-cost LCD panels. OLEDoS forms OLED pixels on a silicon wafer, enabling high pixel density in a small display area and helping shrink headset size, but at a higher cost than LCD.
For SeeYA, securing Phoenix would give the Chinese microdisplay maker a foothold in Meta's consumer hardware supply chain as OLEDoS adoption expands beyond Apple's Vision Pro. BOE's reported failure to qualify leaves SeeYA with Phoenix's initial OLEDoS production volume, although it remains unclear whether Meta could add other suppliers later.
Follow-on orders hinge on Phoenix demand
The reported shipment figure should be viewed in context. Phoenix uses two OLEDoS panels per headset, meaning roughly 1 million panel shipments do not translate into 1 million finished devices. Panel shipments also do not indicate end-market sell-through.
Meta plans to assess demand after Phoenix launches and adjust headset production and subsequent OLEDoS orders accordingly, leaving follow-on volume dependent on early sales.
Phoenix is being developed as an ultralight passthrough MR headset rather than a see-through AR device. UploadVR, which has reported on development units and evidence found in Horizon OS firmware, says the design moves the battery and computing hardware to an external tethered puck to reduce the weight of the head-worn unit. The project is separate from Meta's next gaming-focused Quest device.
Phoenix is currently expected to launch in the first half of 2027 after an earlier target of the second half of 2026 was pushed back. Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth reaffirmed in July that the company is working on multiple next-generation headsets, though Meta has not announced Phoenix or given it an official launch date.
The bigger commercial question is whether Meta can absorb the higher cost of OLEDoS while keeping Phoenix at a price consumers will accept. That balance will help determine not only initial demand for the headset but also the size of SeeYA's follow-on panel orders.
