Lam Research

Lam Research is launching its first country-specific semiconductor venture fund in South Korea after shipping its 15,000th locally manufactured processing chamber, deepening its manufacturing and technology ties with one of the world's major chipmaking hubs.
The October 8 announcement followed Lam's first Supplier Symposium Korea, held a day earlier. The new fund adds startup investment to Lam's Korean operations, which span three manufacturing sites, research and development activities, and approximately 100 local suppliers. Lam purchased more than KRW1 trillion (approx. US$747 million) in products and services from Korean suppliers in 2025.
The expansion comes as growing demand for advanced chips increases pressure on equipment makers to secure specialized components, accelerate process development and bring new technologies into commercial production.
Korea doubles as market and manufacturing base
Lam's 15,000-chamber milestone represents cumulative shipments over 15 years from its manufacturing facilities in Osan, Hwaseong and Yongin, all in Gyeonggi Province. The chambers are components of semiconductor manufacturing equipment used in processes such as etching and deposition, rather than complete equipment systems.
South Korea is also one of Lam's largest customer markets. According to its July 29 financial results, Korea accounted for 20% of revenue in the quarter ended June 28, behind Taiwan at 27% and China at 26%.
Lam reported record quarterly revenue of US$6.72 billion, up 15.1% sequentially, as AI-related demand continued to support semiconductor equipment spending.
The company's Korean manufacturing operations serve a different function from its sales within Korea. Lam's approximately 100 Korean suppliers, many of them small and medium-sized businesses, provide specialized components and materials for manufacturing facilities in Korea and elsewhere.
Lam said local sourcing helps reduce reliance on long-distance logistics and mitigate supply chain disruptions. Suppliers also participate in joint engineering and quality management programs, allowing them to develop capabilities for the company's broader manufacturing network.
The company has not disclosed Korea's share of its total global equipment production or quantified the operational benefits of its local sourcing strategy.
Venture fund backs Korean startups
Lam Capital, the company's corporate venture investment arm, and Hana Ventures are establishing the Lam Research-Hana Semiconductor Unicorn Fund to invest in Korean startups and emerging technology companies.
The fund, Lam's first strategic semiconductor investment program dedicated to a single country, will target manufacturing AI, robotics, advanced packaging and new materials.
Beyond financing, Lam plans to connect startups with its engineering expertise and industry partnerships to support technology validation, commercialization and international expansion.
The company did not disclose the fund's size, expected number of investments or deployment schedule.
The initiative builds on Lam's existing Korean research infrastructure, including its Korea Technology Center in Yongin and the recently established Velocity Lab, which supports rapid materials evaluation and joint development with customers and industry partners.
Lam CEO Tim Archer said at the supplier symposium that rising AI demand and greater technical complexity have made faster problem-solving and the ability to bring new technologies into volume production increasingly important.
Beyond Korea
In a May interview with Reuters , Archer said the company planned to add more sensors and AI capabilities to its tools over the following two years, allowing manufacturers to detect process problems earlier and improve production efficiency.
He also outlined plans for an additional facility near Phoenix to support customers including TSMC, alongside further investment at Lam's Fremont, California, headquarters.
The Korean venture fund extends that technology development effort into a market where Lam already has manufacturing capacity, established suppliers and major semiconductor customers.
For Korean startups, the potential benefit goes beyond venture financing to include access to equipment expertise and technology validation opportunities. For Lam, the fund offers another channel for identifying technologies that could eventually support advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
