Exclusive: Infineon Dresden fab to hit full capacity in 2-3 years, COO says

Infineon COO Alexander Gorski told DIGITIMES in an exclusive interview at SEMICON Taiwan 2026 that the company's new Dresden fab is ramping at twice the pace of prior expansions, boosted by AI tools and a single virtual fab strategy. He said the facility could reach full capacity in two to three years as demand from the market and from AI takes off.

Gorski said the Dresden site is a critical addition to Infineon's manufacturing base, and that its completion is timed well. The company is upgrading capacity at twice its previous speed, helped by digital twin tools that optimize plant layouts and equipment installation.
He added that Infineon began building a single virtual fab several years ago, allowing two or even three factories to use the same machines, processes and systems. That has doubled the speed at which the company qualifies products at the Dresden fab. For example, products developed at the Austria site can now be transferred and qualified in Dresden at twice the previous pace.
Assuming customer orders continue to come in, Infineon expects to fully load the fab and reach its EUR5 billion (US$5.8 billion) potential.
Gorski said capacity is also expanding in Kulim, Malaysia, while the Villach plant in Austria is being upgraded and moving gradually toward 12-inch production.
These steps will allow Infineon to double revenue in the coming years without adding any new cleanrooms. He stressed that the revenue growth would come from scale alone, not price increases, though any pricing gains would add on top.
Gorski said few companies in the industry can double revenue using only existing facilities, which he sees as a key competitive advantage for Infineon.
AI applications top 100
On AI adoption in manufacturing and operations, Gorski said Infineon has more than 100 AI use cases already deployed or under way, along with about 20 digital twins.
He cited quality control, yield optimization, better forecasting, and materials flow on production lines as examples. He compared the AI systems to an intelligent traffic management network that keeps materials moving faster through the line and prevents bottlenecks in front of specific machines. AI has been highly effective in this area, he said.
Infineon is also using agentic AI for equipment self-repair. When machines run into problems, the system helps them repair themselves, which Gorski said is important for maintenance. The company also uses digital twins to simulate product mixes and see how different combinations would work in its factories.
On physical AI, Gorski said Infineon is currently testing robots, including humanoid robots, in several factories. Its most advanced automated manufacturing site is in Singapore, a test factory that has recently been rated L4, one step below fully autonomous L5.
He said the Singapore fab has almost no operators on site and is effectively a dark factory, with robots, automated overhead transport systems, and AI-driven equipment self-repair. That, he said, reflects how Infineon is applying AI.
