Circuit Fabology Microelectronics Equipment (CFMEE) has secured China's first commercial order for a large-format panel-level packaging lithography tool, marking the company's entry into the AI advanced packaging equipment market.
The China-based semiconductor equipment maker's self-developed PLP 2000 direct-write lithography system targets 510mm by 515mm panel-level packaging, or PLP, and has been ordered by an advanced packaging customer.
AI chips, HPC processors, HBM and chiplet architectures are driving demand for advanced packaging as chipmakers seek higher performance beyond process-node scaling. Panel-level packaging uses larger substrates than traditional wafer-level packaging, improving material utilization, production efficiency, and cost effectiveness for large heterogeneous integration and next-generation computing platforms.
Intel, Samsung Electronics and TSMC are all investing in PLP, glass substrates and next-generation packaging platforms to address package size, signal integrity, power delivery and thermal management challenges in large AI chips. The industry increasingly views packaging platforms and manufacturing capability as critical to AI competitiveness, alongside advanced process technology.
Large-format PLP raises lithography bar
Larger package formats make lithography equipment a higher-value bottleneck. Large-substrate processing requires micron-level resolution, high-precision alignment, full-panel uniformity, and mass-production stability. Market sources indicate that large-format PLP lithography tools have traditionally been supplied mainly by Germany's LPKF and Japan's ORC Manufacturing, while Canon and Nikon continue to develop packaging exposure technologies.
CFMEE's PLP 2000 supports substrates of up to 600mm by 600mm, offers 2-micron mass-production resolution, and supports next-generation packaging processes, including CoPoS, fan-out panel-level packaging, and glass substrates. The system is optimized for large-area exposure, pattern resolution and full-panel consistency to improve large-substrate yield and production stability.
Glass substrates have become a key focus in AI packaging as larger GPUs, AI ASICs and HBM packages put pressure on traditional ABF substrates in warpage control, thermal expansion and high-speed signal transmission.
With better dimensional stability, lower dielectric loss, and high-density interconnect potential, glass substrates are emerging as a candidate for next-generation packaging. However, through-glass vias (TGV), reliability verification, and mass-production costs remain barriers. In the near term, glass substrates are expected to coexist with ABF substrates and silicon interposers.
The PLP 2000 order validates CFMEE's move beyond PCB and IC substrate direct-write lithography into panel-level packaging. With global AI advanced packaging capacity still expanding, demand for large-format PLP equipment is likely to rise, making CFMEE's ability to build mass-production references and enter the high-end packaging equipment supply chain the next test.
