Beyond Earth's orbit: how Besxar, Space Forge, Varda, BioOrbit, Voyager are industrializing space

A pioneering cohort of space startups is betting that the key to unlocking next-generation technology lies off Earth. Armed with millions in private capital and backing, these ventures are leveraging the unique conditions of low Earth orbit to manufacture semiconductor materials and pharmaceutical compounds with degrees of purity and structural perfection that can be difficult or impossible to achieve on Earth.

Far from science fiction, off-Earth manufacturing addresses fundamental physical limitations. On Earth, creating advanced semiconductors requires massive, ultra-expensive cleanroom facilities to protect sensitive materials from dust and contaminants. In space, the natural vacuum could reduce the need for some of the extensive vacuum and cleanroom infrastructure used on Earth. Similarly, microgravity suppresses sedimentation and buoyancy-driven convection, allowing molecules to assemble more slowly and uniformly into highly ordered crystal structures.
Semiconductors in orbit: Besxar and Space Forge
Silicon Valley startup Besxar is taking direct advantage of the orbital environment to produce precursors for advanced semiconductors. Founded by former OpenAI staffer Ashley Pilipiszyn, Besxar developed autonomous "fabships" designed to process wafer samples in orbit. Following initial flight tests aboard a SpaceX mission, Besxar confirmed to TechCrunch that its orbital samples were significantly cleaner than non-flown terrestrial wafers, successfully protecting them from contamination. The company plans to scale its manufacturing capability by testing heating, material deposition, and multi-layer processing across a series of flights, with the ultimate goal of deploying larger fabships on heavy-lift vehicles like SpaceX's Starship.
Besxar joins firms such as Space Forge in targeting high-value wafer production for data centers, robotics, and electric vehicles.
Pharmaceuticals and advanced optics: Varda, BioOrbit, and Voyager
Beyond hardware, microgravity is proving to be a game-changer for biological and optical crystallization. California-based Varda Space Industries focuses on growing high-purity protein crystals and novel pharmaceutical formulations. Chief strategy officer Michael Reilly notes that microgravity allows molecules to form highly ordered, uniform structures that are impossible to replicate on Earth, with Varda aiming to have "a space drug in a human in the next five years," according to BBC Science Focus .
UK-based BioOrbit targets cancer treatments by crystallizing monoclonal antibodies into ultra-pure, dense formulations in microgravity. CEO Katie King explains that this transformation allows drugs that normally require multi-hour hospital IV infusions to be delivered as simple, at-home self-injections. Furthermore, BioOrbit launched its "Box-E" experimental hardware to the International Space Station aboard a SpaceX mission to validate its process earlier this year.
At the infrastructure level, Voyager Technologies is developing its "Starlab" commercial space station while pioneering its own in-space manufacturing techniques, including a patented process for growing photonic crystals used in high-speed telecommunications and data centers. Voyager's chief technology officer, Paul Tilghman, confirmed that commercial bookings for Starlab's first year of operation already exceed capacity, signaling immense market demand.
The 10-year horizon
While returning product at scale remains an engineering hurdle, the rapid decline in orbital launch costs is accelerating commercial timelines. Space Forge chief technology officer Andrew Bacon estimates that consumer and enterprise markets could see space-manufactured components integrated into everyday products within the decade.
