Xiaomi warns of more India price hikes as AI squeezes the phone from both sides

The same AI boom that is filling handsets with new features is draining the memory supply that makes cheap phones possible—and in India, the world's second-largest smartphone market, buyers are paying for both. Xiaomi India's leadership told HT Tech that prices will keep climbing through the second half of 2026 as the global chip shortage persists, even as the company doubles down on AI features it says should be felt rather than seen.
"The shortage has impacted all players—the market has seen a slowdown. It's also impacted the upgrade cycle becoming longer," Sandeep Singh Arora, Xiaomi India's chief business officer, told HT Tech . "The industry is going to see further price increases as we head into the second half of 2026, particularly the festival period."
AI beyond the buzzword
Xiaomi's product pitch is that AI should disappear into the device. "Most people think of AI as generative—image creation, video. We believe it should be more subconscious, happening in the background to enhance the experience," said Sandeep Sarma, the company's associate director of marketing and PR, pointing to a charging cycle that learns from a user's habits. "Across imaging, camera, display—everything has an AI layer that eases the experience without the user having to intervene."
Memory costs reset India's price ladder
The pricing warning lands on an already bruised market. India's smartphone shipments fell 10% year over year in the second quarter of 2026, the steepest June-quarter decline in six years, according to Counterpoint Research. The research firm put the average price increase at roughly 15% by quarter-end. The mass-market sub-INR15,000 (US$158.71) segment shipped 45% fewer units, with memory's share of the bill of materials there rising from below 20% to over 45%. IDC's tracker recorded an even sharper 11.1% drop to 33.2 million units, taking first-half volumes to 64.2 million, the weakest in five years. Market value still grew 3.6% on a record average selling price of US$315, Outlook Business reported.
India has been hit harder than China, where shipments fell just 2%, because roughly 60% of its market sits below INR20,000, or about US$210, Counterpoint research director Tarun Pathak told TechCrunch . In this band, memory inflation bites hardest as vendors divert capacity to high-bandwidth memory for AI data centers.
Counterpoint expects the Indian market to contract 13% for the full year, with smartphone memory prices already up nearly fourfold since September 2025 and possibly reaching fivefold. Financing now accounts for more than half of mainline sales, and the firm expects premium models to remain resilient through the festive quarter, while the mass market remains under pressure.
