Apple's first foldable iPhone has entered production, according to reports from multiple Chinese supply-chain outlets, though the device may carry a record price tag and reach buyers later than its formal unveiling.
Production ramp underway
Chinese financial outlet East Money and Korean The Bell reported that the foldable iPhone has entered mass production, with assembly partner Foxconn launching large-scale hiring to secure labor. It cited Foxconn recruitment notices posted on July 6 and 7 covering the Longhua and Guanlan "A" business group, which unnamed sources say is involved in foldable assembly.
Lanjinger reported, citing unnamed industry sources, that Lens Technology will supply the ultra-thin flexible glass (UTG) cover, and that Foxconn's Longhua plant has begun expanding hiring, recruiting temporary workers at CNY22-26 (US$3.2-3.8) an hour for a July-to-October stint. Lens Technology has publicly confirmed that shipments to its major client began at the end of the second quarter.
A high price and limited first batch
The Cover reported that while the phone has entered production, buying one may not be easy. Citing media reports, it said the device uses a book-style inward fold measuring about 4.5mm unfolded and 9.2mm closed, and that Apple dropped Face ID and the telephoto lens to keep it thin. The outlet estimated a domestic starting price of CNY15,000-16,000, with top configurations possibly exceeding CNY20,000, which would set a record for iPhone pricing.
Well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, writing on the social platform X, estimated that second-half 2026 assembly shipments of the foldable iPhone would total roughly 7 million to 8 million units, with just 500,000 to 1 million in the third quarter — about 10% of the total. The Cover cited Kuo as predicting that once pre-orders open, the phone could sell out almost instantly, with shipping times stretching to four to six weeks or longer, and scalpers charging premiums of 50% to 100%.
Launch timing may slip
Kuo added that the foldable could repeat the pattern of 2017's iPhone X: announced alongside other new models, but with pre-orders and actual sales coming later. He said the best window to assess true demand may be late 2026 to the first quarter of 2027.
Yicai reported similar caution. Wang Xiaoya, a senior analyst at Sigmaintell, told the outlet on July 7 that Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable this autumn without delay, but that the first batch of sales could be pushed back and that pre-order volume could be limited. She attributed the likely delay to the difficulty of the cover glass and hinge processes, complex assembly, and relatively low yields, and estimated sales for October to November.
Sigmaintell forecasts global foldable phone sales of about 24 million units in 2026, up roughly 25% year on year, with Apple accounting for 7 million to 8 million. Wang told Yicai that consumer willingness to buy is still rising more slowly than the technology is improving.
