Taiwan panel capacity shifts push TV brands to stock up as LCD price declines slow

The global LCD TV panel market is gradually moving toward supply-demand balance as activity recovers across the supply chain, with price declines expected to ease in September. The improvement reflects a pickup in third-quarter demand, along with market expectations that Chinese panel makers could cut production around China's National Day holiday in early October.

More notably, Taiwanese panel makers' production-line conversions and capacity reductions are becoming increasingly clear, emerging as an important factor shaping TV brands' procurement strategies and panel price trends.
As expectations of further production-line shifts in Taiwan grow, international brands have become more proactive in managing inventories. That trend, combined with increased purchasing by leading TV brands such as Samsung Electronics as they push to meet full-year 2026 targets, has driven a notable rebound in third-quarter panel demand and helped LCD TV panel prices move toward stability.
Toward the end of the third quarter, demand has been driven mainly by stronger procurement from leading TV brands. While some customers, including ODMs, remain relatively cautious, brand-side purchasing has picked up, particularly for large-size LCD TV panels, giving overall demand greater momentum.
Two main factors are behind the stronger procurement. First, the traditional peak-season stocking period has encouraged leading TV brands to purchase more actively. Second, Chinese panel makers may, following past practice, cut production around the National Day holiday, providing additional support for LCD TV panel prices.
Of greater interest to the market is the medium- to long-term outlook. Continued production-line conversions or asset sales by Taiwanese panel makers are adding uncertainty on the supply side, prompting international brands to consider raising inventory levels and building strategic panel stockpiles.
Chinese panel makers have meanwhile continued to expand their presence in the IT display segment. In 2026, the top three Chinese panel makers together already account for more than 70% of the LCD monitor panel market, while OLED is also accelerating its penetration of IT displays. As a result, Taiwanese panel makers, which previously held an advantage in the segment, have been forced to scale back their presence, responding with plant closures and factory sales.
Taiwanese panel makers, including AUO and Innolux, are also accelerating their shift toward semiconductor-related businesses. AUO is redirecting investment toward higher-value technologies such as Micro LED, AI, and co-packaged optics (CPO), while Innolux has made progress in fan-out panel-level packaging (FOPLP), CPO, and through-glass via (TGV) technology.

As LCD TV panels remain profitable, Taiwan's two major panel makers are maintaining a certain level of supply even as they step up their shift into semiconductor-related businesses and continue closing or repurposing plants.
For TV brands, expectations of tighter future supply or changes in product mix are increasing the incentive to secure panel supply in advance and reduce procurement risk.
At the same time, Taiwanese panel makers' capacity transition is no longer solely a supply-side issue. It is increasingly affecting demand as well, as brands adjust their inventory strategies, which in turn is being reflected in LCD panel prices.
According to Sigmaintell, LCD TV panel prices declined across the board in August. Average prices for 32- to 55-inch panels fell US$1–2, while mainstream large-size panels, including 65-, 75-, and 85-inch products, fell about US$2–3.
Entering September, as supply and demand move closer to balance, the pace of LCD TV panel price declines is expected to ease markedly. Average prices for 32-inch panels are forecast to fall by US$1 as demand in second-tier markets remains weak.
For 50-inch panels, with capacity and demand rising in tandem, the decline is expected to narrow to US$1. Prices for 55-inch panels are also forecast to fall by US$1, supported by better-than-expected demand from TV brands.
For larger sizes, stronger demand for mainstream products, combined with a notable recovery in Gen 10.5 fab capacity, is expected to narrow September price declines to about US$1–2.
Industry sources said the series of moves by Taiwanese panel makers, including production-line conversions, plant closures, and factory sales, has begun to emerge as an important structural variable in the LCD TV panel market.
In the short term, panel demand is being supported by TV brands' year-end peak-season stocking and stronger procurement from leading brands, helping ease price declines, with prices potentially stabilizing as early as October.
Over the medium to long term, continued restructuring of Taiwanese panel capacity could encourage brands to raise strategic inventories further, helping limit the scope for additional declines in panel prices.
