NEC reportedly ends quantum computer hardware development, shifts focus to annealing

Japan's NEC has halted development of gate-based quantum-computer hardware, marking a strategic retreat from a field the company helped pioneer, while continuing to invest in quantum annealing and quantum-inspired computing services.
According to Nikkei , NEC stopped developing gate-based quantum-computer hardware at the end of March 2026 after concluding that commercialization could take too long to generate an acceptable return on investment. The company will instead focus on quantum annealing applications, including optimizing delivery routes and factory production schedules, as well as expanding services that simulate quantum computing on conventional computers.
The shift represents a significant change for NEC, which has researched quantum technology since the 1990s. According to NEC, its researchers became the first to demonstrate a superconducting solid-state qubit in 1999, helping establish the technological foundation for today's superconducting approach.
NEC has continued developing quantum annealing hardware based on superconducting parametrons. In 2023, NEC and Japan's AIST developed an eight-qubit quantum annealing machine that could be accessed remotely via the internet, while NEC also combined quantum annealing with its classical vector-supercomputing technology.
The company has already demonstrated commercial applications for the approach. NEC said its quantum-inspired vector annealing technology reduced delivery-planning time at NEC Fielding from about two hours to 12 minutes, illustrating why optimization-focused computing may offer nearer-term business value than general-purpose quantum machines.
Meanwhile, Japan's quantum-computing ecosystem continues to pursue multiple hardware architectures. Hitachi, for example, said in March that it would participate in Japan's Moonshot program on both silicon and neutral-atom quantum computers, with its silicon project targeting 100 qubits by fiscal 2028 and a 1,000-qubit-scale device by fiscal 2030.
According to Diamond Online , many researchers formerly involved in NEC's quantum-computer program have moved to rival Fujitsu. However, the personnel transfers have not been independently confirmed by NEC or Fujitsu.
