Analysis: When 72% of the world's EV batteries are Chinese, one defect travels

A battery quality controversy involving GAC Aion has put supplier CALB, the world's fourth-largest EV battery maker, under scrutiny and highlighted a less comfortable side of China's breakneck expansion in new energy industries.

Photos circulated by Chinese media showed a battery module containing 24 prismatic cells bending after swollen cells pushed against the module structure, giving rise to the nickname "banana battery." Reports surrounding GAC Aion's Aion S have cited battery-cell swelling, leakage, and other faults in high-mileage vehicles equipped with CALB's 177 Ah lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells.
China's new energy industries have often scaled according to a "build first, refine later" model. Whether that approach remains viable for traction batteries, where product failures can directly affect vehicle safety, is a much more consequential question.
The controversy matters beyond a quality problem affecting a single GAC Aion model because CALB has already established itself as a major supplier in the global battery ecosystem. Any persistent quality concern at a supplier of that scale has the potential to reverberate across a much broader customer network.
GAC Aion and CALB's initial responses in July concentrated primarily on vehicle owners. GAC Aion extended battery warranties for affected vehicles, while CALB offered inspection and maintenance support.
Such measures can reduce the financial and operational risks faced by owners. They do not, however, by themselves answer the underlying question: why did the cells develop abnormal swelling in the first place?
From rapid scaling to process discipline
More recent Chinese media reports, citing people familiar with CALB's internal review, say the company has strengthened cell traceability, product validation and manufacturing standards following the controversy.
Reported changes include tighter tolerances in electrode coating and more frequent sampling during electrolyte filling, as well as greater authority for quality teams over batch release decisions. CALB has also reportedly strengthened its monitoring of battery management system data shared with customers.
The broader lesson is straightforward: once a defect escapes the production line and is discovered only after batteries have entered service, the cost of quality control can escalate dramatically—from relatively inexpensive factory inspection to warranty repairs, maintenance and potentially recalls.
That is the other side of China's manufacturing speed.
Low costs, short development cycles and aggressive capacity expansion have allowed Chinese battery makers to scale rapidly and capture global market share. But once cells enter vehicles exposed to high mileage and frequent charging cycles, long-term degradation and manufacturing-consistency problems become much harder to hide.
In other words, some of the same conditions that enable Chinese battery suppliers to grow quickly may also amplify quality risks if production discipline and long-duration validation fail to keep pace.
CALB's scale turns a local problem into a global supply-chain issue
The controversy is therefore not merely a company-specific issue.
CALB has also built relationships with a wide range of automakers. Its own disclosures cite customers and projects involving GAC Aion, Changan Automobile, Geely Automobile, XPeng Motors, and Leapmotor, while the company has entered the supply chains of Toyota, Volkswagen and Hyundai and secured projects with other international automakers.
The implications become even more significant when viewed across China's battery industry as a whole.
SNE Research data show seven Chinese companies, rather than six, ranked among the world's top 10 EV battery suppliers in the first half of 2026. Together, they accounted for 72.4% of global installations.
With more than seven out of every 10 GWh of EV batteries supplied by Chinese manufacturers, China's production quality increasingly has global consequences.
Beijing raises the bar on quality as Chinese EVs go global
Regulatory scrutiny is also tightening, although the broader quality-control campaign predates the CALB controversy and should not be attributed solely to the "banana battery" case.
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) launched a nationwide 2026 program to inspect vehicle-production consistency and safety, including random sampling and testing of EV battery packs.
The regulator has said manufacturers whose products fail national standards or production-consistency requirements can face public notices, suspension of relevant vehicle approvals and restrictions on new product applications.
MIIT inspections in July included random sampling of vehicles and traction battery packs at automakers such as GAC Aion, XPeng, Chery, Nio and JAC.
Beijing is simultaneously tightening oversight as Chinese automakers expand overseas.
The Ministry of Commerce, MIIT, and the State Administration for Market Regulation recently issued guidelines requiring Chinese auto companies operating abroad to comply with local quality and safety regulations, price products according to costs and market conditions, and avoid frequent or large price swings that could harm consumers or disrupt competition.
For China's battery industry, the challenge is consequently moving beyond scale.
The first phase of competition was largely about how quickly capacity could be built, costs reduced, and market share captured. The next phase will increasingly test whether manufacturers can maintain process consistency, durability and safety across millions of cells operating for years under vastly different real-world conditions.
The "banana battery" controversy is therefore more than an embarrassing nickname for one defective battery module. It is a warning that as China's battery industry becomes deeply embedded in the global automotive supply chain, manufacturing speed will increasingly be judged against the much harder benchmark of long-term quality.
