TEL sees AI-driven packaging, memory demand reshaping Taiwan strategy

Tokyo Electron's Taiwan president said AI is pushing semiconductor demand into new areas, with advanced packaging, DRAM, high-bandwidth memory, and NAND flash all gaining momentum. He said Taiwan remains central to the industry's supply chain, and TEL plans to deepen local technology, service, and research ties.

Advanced packaging moves from niche to priority
Seiji Nakama said advanced packaging is still smaller than front-end processes, but its growth rate is far faster, making it a top priority for Tokyo Electron. He said the company will keep expanding its technology footprint in the area as customers push for more complex, AI-ready chip designs.
TEL is already adding to its advanced packaging lineup beyond existing lithography, coating and development, cleaning, and etching tools. New offerings include 3D technologies, wafer-to-wafer bonding equipment, laser trimming, and related laser tools. Nakama said these products are intended to support advanced packaging workflows, widen TEL's business scale in the segment, and position the company for a market that is expected to expand significantly.
He said Taiwan is already a highly important and indispensable hub in the global semiconductor industry. As AI rapidly reshapes the sector, TEL intends to remain close to customers in Taiwan and strengthen collaboration through its Next Door Strategy, which combines service, research, and development support near client sites.
Nakama also said future investment in Taiwan will continue to be carefully evaluated in response to rising customer demand. He noted that TEL has multiple service bases in Taiwan and places its research centers near customers' own development teams to speed up technology adoption and improve support.
Memory demand gets a lift from AI
On memory, Nakama said AI is becoming a major driver across the market, lifting demand not only for DRAM but also for HBM and 3D NAND. He said that as AI applications spread, demand for high-performance memory is likely to remain strong for some time.
TEL already has a strong position in DRAM and NAND flash, he said, and AI-related memory demand is expected to become an important engine for future growth. He expressed confidence that the company's memory business will continue expanding as those markets develop.
Taiwan stays central as CPO and SiPh advance
Asked whether Taiwan could lose relevance as the US, Japan, and other countries push for greater semiconductor self-sufficiency, Nakama said Taiwan remains too large and too important to be sidelined. He described it as a critical global hub and said TEL closely follows customer needs there and adjusts technology accordingly.
He said the company is also advancing its work in co-packaged optics, or CPO, and silicon photonics, or SiPh, as data centers driven by AI continue to expand. Nakama said CPO is a key technology for the next generation, while SiPh requires the integration of multiple process technologies rather than a single tool or step.
TEL believes its portfolio in lithography, coating, development, cleaning, and drying can help integrate those processes for customers. That, Nakama said, can shorten research and development cycles, improve the pace of product development, and improve stability in mass production.
At the same time, supply chains, geopolitical risk, and talent shortages remain pressure points for the sector. Nakama said AI demand requires major capital spending and brings technical and equipment challenges, while TEL's supplier ecosystem in Taiwan gives it flexibility to respond to cost changes, supply disruptions, and capacity shifts. On geopolitics, he said the company is monitoring developments closely and will act quickly if conditions change.
He also said semiconductor talent shortages are a broader industry issue, not just a TEL problem. Through its global customer engineering system, the company has been building service capability near customers worldwide, and it is increasingly using global recruitment channels, including academia, consultants, and partners.
TEL also showcased panel-level packaging at Semicon Taiwan 2026, highlighting efforts to improve yield, reduce overlay errors, and handle tighter line widths. The company said the process still faces challenges, including a lack of standardized large-panel equipment and tighter spacing requirements as redistribution layers scale.
