Non-GAAP financial measures
Non-GAAP Financial Measures
The appendix includes information on our Return on Invested Capital ('ROIC'), which is a non-GAAP financial measure. We define ROIC as net
operating income less income tax expense divided by average invested capital over the trailing 12 months ('TTM'). We believe ROIC is a useful
financial measure for evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of our use of capital and believe ROIC is an important driver of shareholder
return over the long term. Our method of determining ROIC may differ from the methods of other companies, and therefore may not be
comparable to those used by other companies. Management does not use ROIC for any purpose other than the reasons stated above. ROIC is
a measure of performance not defined by accounting principles generally accepted in the United States, and should be considered in addition
to, not in lieu of, GAAP reported measures.
The tables that follow on page 17 include a reconciliation of the calculation of our return on total assets ('ROA') (which is the most closely
comparable GAAP financial measure) to the calculation of our ROIC for the periods presented.
The appendix includes information on our free cash flow, which is a non-GAAP financial measure. We define free cash flow as net cash
provided by operating activities less capital expenditures, net of proceeds from sales of property and equipment, less acquisitions and other
investing activities. Free cash flow as a percentage of net income is a non-GAAP measure and is calculated as free cash flow divided by net
income for the applicable period. Capital returned to shareholders as a percentage of free cash flow on a trailing twelve months basis is a non-
GAAP measure calculated as the sum of dividends paid and share repurchases over the trailing twelve months divided by free cash flow over
the same period. Management uses these measures to assess the cash generated by operations that is available to fund dividends, share
repurchases, and debt reduction after the investment required to maintain and grow the business. These measures should be considered in
addition to, and not as substitutes for, net cash provided by operating activities, net cash provided by operating activities as a percentage of net
income, or net cash provided by operating activities as a percentage of total capital returned on a trailing twelve months basis, in each case as
reported in accordance with GAAP, and they may not be comparable to similarly titled measures reported by other companies.
The table on page 18 reconciles free cash flow to net cash provided by operating activities, and presents the related percentages of net income
and of total capital returned to shareholders.
