[07:00] 🎼everything you need to get the edge at the end of the market day get ahead of tomorrow's trading with the close.
[07:00] Days on Bloomberg, context changes everything.
[07:00] This is Yesia train, I'mbrian in Tokyo, the top.
[07:00] ThisApple shares sliding as it warns of supply constraints ahead and reports weakness in china and services.
[07:00] 🎼Amazon jumps after fifth straight quarter of cloud sales growth Asian stock set to fall Wall Street higher after rebounding.
[07:00] Chip makes microt adding a record $450 billion to its market value.
[07:01] Sa to officially have intervened to spark the yen's biggest jump since 2023 focus now turns to the bog decision.
[07:01] And then any clues on the timing of the next hike and I'm Hetdy Stroudwarts here city take a look at the setup for trading across.
[07:01] Asia, as Sherry mentioned, tech will be in heavy focus today, particularly when it comes to some of these Apple suppliers and Apple and device adjacent names trading.😊
[07:01] In Japan, in the Korean session as well as we've got integrated China trading as well at the moment, though we are seeing that buoyancy in terms of that turnaround.😊
[07:01] For, Asian stocks are set to gain after the rally in the U again kind of holding most of what we've seen from those suspected intervention driven gains.😊
[07:01] Nco futures about quarter1% it is, of course Bj decision day we're also seeing cosB futures looking like a very solid bounce.😊
[07:01] Of course, it has just been such a tumultuous week peppered with some heavy losses for Korean stocks and AI some of those.😊
[07:01] stocks in particular US futures holding gains of about two tenths of1% we're seeing dollar again just under that one.
[07:02] S the board to take a look at what' watching because, of course, we are still continuing to watch developments when it comes to the Middle East.😊
[07:02] U Iran war oil is looking fairly steady as we head into the end of the week, new traded crude up about half a percent, but still prices are.😊
[07:02] For the biggest monthly gain since March as we've seen this reescalation of the U. Iran war strikes again were exchanged.😊
[07:02] Thusday, Saudiau Arabia talking about forming an alliance to try and protect navigation in and around the Red Sea region, of course we've seen that as a potential.
[07:02] Second front or a new front, I should say with the Houthi tensions in that part of the world as well, in the meantime the IMF seeing the risk.😊
[07:02] The could the global economy into recession, so we continue to watch for any signs of progress and how that plays through.
[07:02] Inflationary concerns as well here in Sydney, we're also seeing a reversal of fortunes with upside of 1.1% indicated.😊
[07:03] Well, Apple shares under pressure in that trade after component shortages weighed on its sales forecast, but Amazon surging after cloud computing.
[07:03] ue accelerated for the fifth straight quarter let's take a look at Apple first our senior tech editor Nick Turnner is in San Francisco so tell us about the fortunes.😊
[07:03] Of Apple on the balance of what we heard.
[07:03] Poin report in the end, they gave a forecast that was a little bit below what people expected and they cited supply.
[07:03] kind of the very thing that people were worried about in terms of it being harder to get certainly memory chips, but also computer processors.
[07:03] And ultimately, it added up to kind of a disappointing report.
[07:03] What do we know about the China business because that's been a source of concern for quite some time, think starting to bottom out?
[07:03] downsideThat was an interesting one because it's still up and it still seems like the recovery there is.
[07:04] Is proceeding it was it didn't grow quite as much as what some of the analysts were looking for and I think when.
[07:04] The earnings initially hit that plus slower services revenue were sort of two issues that people were concerned about.
[07:04] Is ultimately, I think that recovery there still seems to be on track and it might be the kind of thing that people aren't too worried about.
[07:04] Order say, but with everything else going on, it was sort of one more thing that was a cause for concern.
[07:04] Different picture for Amazon, a fifth straight quarter of cloud sales growth really is it widespread strength that we're seeing that is a really kind of.😊
[07:04] The support that we're getting from AWS in particular, Yeah I mean really.
[07:04] to sort of be the opposite of what has been attractive to Apple investors lately because Apple's shares have been up recently.
[07:05] Because it's not pumping all this money into AI infrastructure and it seems to be a little bit of a safer bet now here you have Amazon.
[07:05] Like doing that and also giving a picture here that investors were happy with today.
[07:05] It's a little hard to tell how those things work together, but it certainly it seems like it was a reassuring message coming from Amazon.
[07:05] Our senior tech editor ni Turner there joining us from s fsco and we do have breaking news about anthropic at the moment.
[07:05] Announced that their AI models had breached three different organizations during cybersecurity tests that went badly.
[07:05] ALittle more than a week after open AI disclosed a similar incident anthropic now saying in a blog post that it.
[07:05] ade the discovery after performing a review of its own cybersecurity tests following open AI's announcement of that breach.
[07:05] IAnd anthropic tests, the AI models were able to access the internetn that's from within testing environments that should have been sealed.
[07:06] That's according to Anthropic's blog, right, And we're reacting to big tech earnings right now.
[07:06] Amazon Ga in the after our session, let's break down the results from this giant Spencer so is in Seattlettle.
[07:06] Let's take a look at the earnings results, Spencer, and let's start with those cloud services, revenue, just skyrocketing, give us some of the key.
[07:06] Takeaways first of the earningsYeah, they had a big beat on their cloud computing revenue.
[07:06] Growth, so delivering a lot, you know, faster pace of sales growth than analysts were expecting. and then you layer on top of that.
[07:06] That they're up being there in, you know, their expected investment this year to $220 billion. They' initially guided $200 billion this year on.
[07:06] Capitals now they're saying that it's going to be more like 220 billion. And so Amazon is really unapologetically.
[07:07] P the pedal to the metal on artificial intelligence investments and its chip investments. And so investors like what they're seeing.
[07:07] From seeing from Amazon, even though they've been know reacted less favorably to some other companies that were.
[07:07] Like Google that we're also investing so heavily Yeah so what did investors like about this how was Andy Jassie?
[07:07] To explain this awayThe big message that he gave investors was, look, so the thing that might spook people was.
[07:07] Negative free cash flow. So they're they're putting out more money than they're bringing in, which can make people scared. But what what Jase emphasizes like.😰
[07:07] Look we're building data centers from the ground up, these are buildings and structures on royal land that's going to be good for 30 years.
[07:07] Then every five, six years, we're going to have to modernize the equipment inside them, so it's not going to be as big an expenditure.
[07:07] To keep these facilities up to date so what he's saying is we're looking at these really big outlays right now, but our.
[07:08] Investments in the future to keep them modern won't be as heavy. So he's kind of presenting this as like a once in a generation.
[07:08] What about the bread and butter right now when it comes to seals through Amazon, they have their annual.
[07:08] Prime annual Prime Day as well sale in the month of June, so did we get any more insight on how they're doing?
[07:08] Yeah, the core ecommerce side is doing well, the cloud computing.
[07:08] is most of the profit, but the e-merce business for Amazon is still the bulk of the revenue and you know that's doing.
[07:08] That's doing fine. They gave an update about Prime day just saying that sales are strong. they said that people are coming to Amazon more frequently for parish.
[07:08] And groceries that that that business is doing quite well and that they', know, that their investments in.
[07:09] Making deliveries faster is paying off one other thing they did mention is that they got about 600 million in tariff free funds.
[07:09] You know, the Trump tariffs in the U were a big deal that were shot down by the Supreme Court and so they said that they did receive 600.
[07:09] million dollars in tariff refunds in the second quarter that's the bulk of what they expect to get and that they'll be giving.
[07:09] Refunds to consumers in some form or fashion, but you know given given how many customers they have, those won't be those won't be.
[07:09] Very big checks for customers sponsor so there with the latest on thoseon.
[07:09] Amazon results but let's turn to how the markets are doing right now, let's bring in bloomberg's Anthonyony Stevens for a check of how we might see as tech.
[07:09] Also react, given of course, the strong earnings that we got or at least a mixed reaction that we got to those big tech earnings in the overnight session.
[07:09] Mentham had a really good time of it yesterday was.
[07:10] And8%, really big pop on the month where it has really struggled. So it found its way at the hundred day moving average. And a big reason for that.
[07:10] These kind of signs that there are buyers emerging for all the people that are cutting. And one of the important subs storiesies within that is the story about.
[07:10] Situational awareness. This is a very kind of pivotal tech fund. It's run by a guy that's not even 30 Leopold National brand.😊
[07:10] Retail loves him. And kind of frankly, so do I He grew a fund from like $225 million up to $20 billion.😊
[07:10] At the highests. But then he experienced a huge drawdown. And Citadel has come in to buy his portfolio. That's caused a huge pop in his holding.
[07:10] So double digit pops across the high momentum space in the US. And that comes into Asia because Hyix is part of that portfolio.😊
[07:10] Heinix had a massive pop and closed at a 56% premium. The highest premium it's traded at since the listing. So things look very.😊
[07:11] Very good for Asia coming into today. And Amazon kind of probably helps that picture..😊
[07:11] Roough read through for risks today though, because after such a tumultuous week, I do wonder how welly.🤢
[07:11] Gains are going to hold going forward. Yeah, we are in kind of a liquidity tussle between the people who have to cut.
[07:11] A pure waste management perspective, and I would say Korean retail continued to do that yesterday, Korean retail was a net seller versus foreign buying.😊
[07:11] Versus where is the incremental buying coming from and what is that incremental buying going to be driven by, Amazon is a really good example of the fundamental.
[07:11] ental demandmand for compute. They are sticking to their guns, and the market is rewarding them because they have the cash to plough at it. So for today.
[07:11] It looks like the fundamentals are going to override some of these technical overboardought concerns, especially as the deal averaging looks.😊
[07:11] To be running towards this logical end, You're hearing of big funds in the Us cutting positions. You're hearing about Korean retail cutting positions.
[07:12] The parts of the investor base that people have been worried about and the momentum trade kind of finding a level gives the fundamental bias some comfort.😊
[07:12] But things still remain very, very kind of volatile deep and the incremental news flow around China and its technology.😊
[07:12] Disruption will remain the key driver of markets in the back end of the year.
[07:12] are still ahead reports of official Yen intervention putting a brighter spotlight in today's Bj RE decision well take a closer look at this.😊
[07:12] 🎼Next, this is Bloomberg.
[07:13] Yeah.
[07:13] 🎼Get your fixed income fixed what Bberg real yield now it its new time. Thursdays at 12 PM Eastern right here on.😊
[07:13] 🎼Bloomberg the countdown is on everything you need to get the edge at the end of the market day.
[07:13] Get ahead of tomorrow's trading with the close, weekdays on Bloomberg, context changes everything.
[07:14] 🎼In case you missed it on Daybreak Europe, we're talked going with the EU regulator on this though.😊
[07:14] As I told you, I interact a lot with Americas and Chinese players and we see Trump fighting for their companies all the time. we see the Chinese fighting for their companies all the time.
[07:14] Here in Europe, I feel I'm fighting against the European regulators, Not that they are fighting for us. They are fighting against us. It's a big mistake because we need to.
[07:14] 🎼really big global tech leaders Europe live every week money.
[07:14] 🎼ing it's about understanding what's actually happening markets are the best way to glean signal from noise and thats.
[07:14] try to do every morning this is Bloberg surveillance.
[07:15] Take a look at how the Japanese yen is trading at the moment and they're a little bit of pressure but still below that one.
[07:15] You level against the U dollar remember that spike of as much as 3.3% overnight we're talking about the biggest jump in.
[07:15] Over two years, which led to tons of speculation the Japanese authorities come into the markets, a source now telling Bloomberg that yes.
[07:15] Japanese officials have actually intervened in the markets and Nikke saying that even U.S. officials over there were doing yen dollar.
[07:15] So we are seeing potential coordination between these two big actors in the fx space.
[07:15] Including the fact that Secretary Bessson just came out a few minutes ago, saying that the yen seemed very undervalue to him in an inter.
[07:15] With Fox business, all of these moves, very surprising in the Fx space coming just ahead of a Bank of Japan policy.
[07:15] MeetingSo it raises a question, will this just be another routine hold as all economists surveyed by bloomloomberg had thought, let's discuss.
[07:16] government reporter yo Jones says now with more here what are we expecting from the boj when we have seen such a surprise?
[07:16] from authorities coming just ahead of this decision.
[07:16] Very unusual move by the currency authorities to step in probably the you ahead of the B.
[07:16] And today's implication is limited probably because the BJ was widely expected to hold the rate.
[07:16] So even before this action in the currency market, however, what's going to be interesting here is that would what kind of.
[07:16] Implications this move will have for stocks as well because stocks are in another territory right now and if stocks.
[07:16] Continue to plunge maybe further into bear market, then that's going to act know add more pressure on the Bj.
[07:17] Maybe to slow down the pace of rate hikes going forward, is it too?
[07:17] Is it going too far to think that potentially we could see a shock in all situation like we have done Alllahari Riko Kura in the past, where the BOJ?
[07:17] I mean, we have heard from sources at the boj you've talked to people that have seen potentially faster tightening.
[07:17] You so that's a really increasingly trickies question right now.
[07:17] Because one of the reasons that BOJ was considered or maybe thinking about faster pace of rate hikes was that no, you know, the impact.
[07:17] Of the week PM, but if the finance ministry is make taking more responsibility for that accessible.
[07:17] Volatility and weakness in the year, that may change the some of the film making within the BJ.
[07:17] It's hard to know because the yang is still at a very low level and if you remember what happened before.
[07:18] TheyWith the previous intervention, the impact did not last so much intervention.
[07:18] More than $70 billion It's interesting right now, the fiscal picture seems to be moving in opposite direction to monetary policy.
[07:18] We got the confirmation from Prime Minister Tagaichi when it comes to that sales tax cut, tell us the implication of this.
[07:18] See, you know, so that's also another very complicated situation shown here about how to deal with infred.
[07:18] And Prime Minister decided to cut the sales tax on food and beverages to 1%.
[07:18] During the election campaign,So that's negative for inflation. But when you think about it, you know, it's a traditional.
[07:18] Of the central bank is to control inflation by raising interest rates. So you know which way the government is going.
[07:19] More relying on the artificial measures such as tax cut and subsidies or letting Bj have its course.
[07:19] Keep continuing to raise interest rates. It's a watershed moment, a difficult to have, know predict that.
[07:19] But can be both ways or there's going to be quite few quite a lot of tensions between.
[07:19] loberg and government there inkyo'.
[07:19] on the again Garuffwood Reynolds who leads our markets live Asia coverage, we've been talking about the potential for this for some time.😊
[07:19] More to do with the big rise in 30 year yields that we've seen is it wanting to kind of maximise the impact before the BJ?
[07:19] Why I think there's been a lot of speculation that Japan would intervene at some stage.
[07:19] And plenty of anticipation that they would wait until after the Fed because it'd be very hard, imagine if they had intervened before the F.😊
[07:20] And the Fed was hawkish, either delivered a surprise hike or sounded more hikeish than it did more hawkish than it did last.
[07:20] Then although the yen might need some help, you wouldn't get much bang for your buck instead.😊
[07:20] You had a F outcome that left the dollar exposed, left it vulnerable so from a simple timing.
[07:20] Point of view, if you want to use a baseball analogy they were sitting fastball, they got one and they hit it out of the park.
[07:20] They'll be happy with what they've done, you would argue we are arguing on M.
[07:20] That they need to do more one way or the other because where it is now, it's like under 160.
[07:20] On dollar yen, that doesn't look sustainable and there's plenty of skepticism leaking through in the option space, so I think get the very,
[07:21] Atas the BJ needs to talk a good game, they need to make it clear that they are willing to hire.🤢
[07:21] Not just sooner than is currently being priced, but they're willing to look at back to back hikes potentially that they're going to shift away from.
[07:21] Once every six month idea that's not going to cut it, I do think the meeting today is live.
[07:21] The BJ job might even be made a little bit easier by the way that.
[07:21] Equities are looking more constructive now, including the signs that Japanese tech equities.
[07:21] Might be in a better place than there were. So there will be some pain for Japanese equities because of the yen rebounding but.
[07:21] They might just have to look past that in the short term Let's talk about the live liveliness of the Bj today.
[07:21] Really be maximum impact if they came through with some shock and all Yeah, this would be the time the dollars.
[07:22] Is having plenty of difficulties, right climate, higher oil prices aren't helping it.
[07:22] The second day look at the Fed has left people.
[07:22] Or convinced that this represents, from Washer's point of view, a significant shift away from they're not shut.
[07:22] Ibody sure if he's a dove, they certainly don't see him as being a hawk and in that space when you look at what's going on around the world,
[07:22] That makes the dollar vulnerable, so now is the time to strike again and strike hard if you're Japan.
[07:22] And if you get it from both sides, you've had the MOF coming in with intervention if now you get the BO.
[07:22] Like I said, at the very least, talking a good hawkish game, talking about rapid rate hikes.
[07:23] You can sustainably move the yen away from that 160 level, which has been a major pain point.🤢
[07:23] You can start to try and change the narrative on a sustained basisford Reynolds who.
[07:23] Cover very, very busy day for the team and subscribers can turn to the terminal for more on that Bank of Japan decision today tIV goes as your function for the latest update.
[07:23] 🎼It's our commentary from our team of expert editors, more ahead here on the Asia trade, this is Bloomberg.😊
[07:24] In case you missed it on Bberg surveillance the.
[07:24] In economycon is I think one of the coolest things we've done in a long time, a blocked middle seat and coach is just another example, Scott, have you had that idea for a long time.
[07:24] In fairness, Air New Zealand, this one that came up with it and I've wanted to do it ever since they did it of all the stuff we've done, I personally think it is one of.
[07:24] 🎼I love the idea to relax when I was a teenager young in my 20s flying when I saw an empty row.😊
[07:24] 🎼Three seats and the plane taken off I'd never been more excited and as soon as you got up to about 35,000 feet, I was on it.
[07:24] Trying to lie down and move the armrest to make this work I spent a number of trips when I was young and nine ra doing the same thing one you the same you spot those three.
[07:25] Sees that's fine and they sees someone outside and get up and, it actually happened with my younger son, don't miss Bloomberg surveillance live.
[07:25] Every weekday.
[07:25] 🎼About start and you're already looking for that edge The opening trade brings you everything you need to know as markets open across Europe. I'm Gu John.
[07:25] 🎼I'm Anna Edwards and I'm Tom McK. this is your opening trade only on B back.
[07:25] Former st lois F president james Bullard says.
[07:25] Reaction to the central being's hawkage hold shows some erosion of credibility Paul I told us more about how he viewed chairman Kevinvin w's news conference.
[07:25] After the decision unfortunately, I thought it was a little bit rocky as probably not unin.
[07:25] Pa a given that chairir Walsh is new in the role this is a second press conference, but I thought.
[07:26] You know, the sell off and the higher yields in the 30 year are, you know, kind of nerve.
[07:26] racking for a central banker dollar depreciation on the announcement, I think he needed to do more.
[07:26] To create optionality in September, and he didn't do very much of that.
[07:26] Emphasized the inflation target and that you weren't backing off the inflation target, gave a little bit of a hint.
[07:26] That.
[07:26] You know mightight be a factor there, I don't think that was helpful and.
[07:26] You mightight as well explain what the main arguments were around the table because the members are going to go out and tell you what.
[07:26] What they are thinking and basically what they're thinking is there are two more inflation reports to come and we want to see those inflation reports.
[07:27] Before we got going on any kind of hiking campaign, so you might as well at least acknowledge the contours of the argument I understand.
[07:27] Andand he doesn't want to give forward guidance, but it's a work in progress and he's very accomplished, I think, in many ways.
[07:27] But Marcus obviously didn't like this. A work in progress implies there is some intent here object.
[07:27] Jim,What do you think it is What is the intent, What's the objective Well what do?
[07:27] I would characterize interest rate policy in the US as being partly the Fed.
[07:27] Partly the market and he feels like it's become 90% fed and 10% market, he wants that back to dial that back.
[07:27] If 50% or something like that and so that it's you can get, you can't drive either side to zero, both sides have a role to play.
[07:28] But he feels like it's been too much fed, not enough market, and maybe' Zing and the others.
[07:28] Action now, but I think we'll get to a bit equilibrium eventually.

[07:29] Bringing you the latest geopolitical news whenever and wherever it happens I'm David Garra and Solar uni.
