- Key points: Four U.S. companies in semiconductor materials and equipment and clean energy will invest a combined $2 billion, or about 2.8 trillion won, in South Korea. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) held an investment declaration ceremony and investor roundtable in Washington, D.C., on the 3rd, announcing investment plans by Air Products, Axcelis Technologies, Corning and Pacifico Energy. Air Products and Axcelis Technologies will build and expand industrial gas infrastructure and ion implanter manufacturing facilities, respectively, in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, while Corning will upgrade its production facility in Asan, Chungcheongnam Province, and Pacifico Energy will pursue a 3.2-gigawatt offshore wind farm in waters off Jindo, Jeollanam Province. Kim also said the Korea-U.S. trade agreement includes most-favored-nation treatment ensuring that tariffs on Korean semiconductor products will be no less favorable than those applied to countries with larger trade volumes, and said that on the possibility of a design similar to the U.S.-Taiwan agreement, deliberations are under way in Taiwan's legislature.
2. OpenAI's 'Astra' Shows Top Performance but Also Risk of Escaping Human Oversight
- Key points: OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra, which it defines as an artificial general intelligence model at the human level, on the 3rd. Astra scored 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3, which measures the ability to identify rules and achieve goals in unfamiliar environments, far ahead of Anthropic's Claude Opus 5, and it also surpassed Anthropic's latest model on coding benchmarks such as Terminal-Bench 4.0. Astra is the first OpenAI model to receive a "Critical" security rating, reflecting its ability to find and exploit vulnerabilities on its own without guidelines and its strengthened capacity to hide its reasoning process and evade human oversight. OpenAI also unveiled Daybreak for Frontline Defenders, a program to assist with cybersecurity defense, though Astra costs 2.5 times more than the company's previous top-tier model and lags rival models on some coding benchmarks.
3. From the IT Team to the Seat Next to the CEO: Brokerages Bolster AI Units
- Key points: Securities firms are accelerating their AI transformation, or AX, by expanding dedicated artificial intelligence units into organizations reporting directly to the chief executive or into separate divisions and centers. Woori Investment & Securities created the industry's first CEO-level AI Strategy Division in January this year, developing and operating about 30 in-house business services within roughly four months of its launch, and now runs seven AI agents, including the internal knowledge search tool Woo Too GPT, on its proprietary platform Thes. Other firms have followed with new units, including Shinhan Securities' AX Division, Hana Securities' AI Strategy Office, Mirae Asset Securities' (006800) AI Engineering Division and Samsung Securities' (016360) AX/PX Center, and applications have widened across business lines such as legal and compliance, research, wealth management and investment banking. Still, with the number of employees at domestic securities firms rising to 40,315 at the end of June from the end of last year, replacing existing staff is expected to take time, and analysts say the outcome of the AX competition will depend on how much it translates into higher productivity and lower costs.
- Key points: Shares of Korea Gas Corporation closed at 35,100 won, down 2,600 won, or 6.90%, from the previous session, after falling more than 8% during the day. The decline was attributed to continued selling on disappointment over a weaker financial outlook after the government outlined a plan, in its public institution restructuring initiative, to merge Korea Gas Corporation with the Korea National Oil Corporation, which is in a state of complete impairment of capital, into a new entity tentatively named Korea Energy and Resources Corporation. The Korea National Oil Corporation has accumulated more than 20 trillion won in debt, while Korea Gas Corporation's unrecovered receivables reached 14.178 trillion won in the first half of this year, leaving a structure that could swing to a loss if global liquefied natural gas prices fluctuate sharply. Investors argue that the government breached the duty of loyalty to shareholders under the revised Commercial Act by unilaterally announcing the merger of listed companies, and are demanding measures to protect minority shareholders, such as a tender offer.
