Samsung C&T (028260) has been selected as a strategic partner for a 1.2-gigawatt next-generation small modular reactor project in Sweden, accelerating its push into the global nuclear power market.
Samsung C&T said on the 3rd that it signed a joint development agreement in Stockholm with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, or GVH, for a new nuclear power project led by Studsvik, a leading Swedish nuclear technology company. Senior executives from each company attended the signing to finalize the terms of cooperation, including Samsung C&T Chief Executive Oh Se-chul, Studsvik Chief Executive Karl Tedeen and GVH Chief Executive Jason Cooper.
The project calls for building four BWRX-300 reactors, a 300-megawatt SMR model GVH developed based on its existing boiling water reactor technology, for a combined capacity of 1.2 gigawatts. The site is one of Studsvik's holdings that has been licensed for nuclear facility operations, and commercial operation is targeted for the mid-2030s. The BWRX-300 is the reactor design being built in Darlington, Ontario, as the West's first commercial SMR, and it moved a step closer to commercialization after an operating license application was filed in April.
Samsung C&T and GVH were chosen as the final partners for the project after competitive bidding among three groups that began in May last year. Studsvik, which is leading the project, was founded in 1947 as the central institution of Sweden's national nuclear program and now operates in more than 20 countries. Under the agreement, Studsvik will oversee overall project development, including licensing, environmental impact assessment and consultations with government authorities. Samsung C&T and GVH will serve as joint EPC contractors, taking responsibility for the entire process from initial planning through construction and completion.
The Swedish award marks the first tangible result for Samsung C&T and GVH, which formed a strategic partnership last year and have been working to build a local value chain to target the global nuclear market. The Swedish government is pursuing a long-term expansion policy to add 2.5 gigawatts of capacity from SMRs and large reactors combined by 2035, and to increase that to 10.0 gigawatts by 2045, in the interest of energy security and carbon neutrality. Samsung C&T said it plans to use the project as a launching point to accelerate its push into next-generation SMR markets worldwide, with Europe as a bridgehead.
