LG Electronics is teaming up with Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) on an energy cashback program designed to encourage consumers to use home appliances during periods of lower electricity demand.
LG Electronics said on Aug. 27 that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with KEPCO at the KEPCO Art Center in Seoul's Seocho district to launch a pilot "Smart Appliance Cashback" program.
Under the program, customers who operate designated appliances outside peak electricity-demand periods will receive credits on their electricity bills. Participants will receive 100 won per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity consumed by eligible appliances during designated hours, with cashback capped at 300 won per hour. The amount will automatically be deducted from electricity bills through KEPCO's energy cashback service.
The program covers four types of appliances: washing machines, dryers, dishwashers and LG Styler clothing-care systems. LG's WashTower and WashCombo, which combine washing and drying functions, are also eligible.
The program is designed to shift appliance use to between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekends and public holidays during the spring months of March through May and the fall months of September and October, when electricity demand is relatively low. The initiative aims to improve power supply stability by shifting consumption to daytime hours when renewable-energy generation, including solar power, is higher.
Customers can use the service by applying for the Smart Appliance Cashback program on KEPCO's website and then linking the service through LG Electronics' artificial intelligence (AI) home platform, the LG ThinQ app.
LG Electronics is also expanding energy-saving programs using home appliances. Its ThinQ 26-Degree Challenge encourages users to set their air conditioners to the government-recommended cooling temperature of 26 degrees Celsius.
"We will promote a culture of smarter energy use and introduce services that contribute to sustainable energy consumption," said Jung Ki-hyun, vice president and head of the HS Platform Business Center at LG Electronics' HS Company.
