Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare genetic condition that causes recurrent episodes of severe swelling, often requiring burdensome injection-based therapies.ORLADEYO is the first and only oral prophylactic therapy available for children in Japan, offering families a once- daily granule formulation designed specifically for pediatric administration.
The granules can be taken directly with water or milk, or sprinkled over soft food, reducing treatment burden and improving convenience.
The approval was supported by interim results from the APeX-P clinical trial, the largest long-term prophylaxis study in pediatric HAE patients. Data showed ORLADEYO was generally well tolerated, maintained a consistent safety profile across the age group, and led to early and sustained reductions in monthly attack rates with no new safety signals identified beyond those seen in adult and adolescent trials.The most common treatment-emergent adverse event was nasopharyngitis.
BioCryst will launch ORLADEYO for children in Japan following completion of the national reimbursement pricing process. OrphanPacific, Inc. serves as BioCryst's local partner and holds the marketing authorization.
