Kia (000270.KS) said it signed a multi-party memorandum of understanding on the 28th to promote the "Seocheon Tidal Flat Blue Carbon Ecological Restoration Project," together with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, South Chungcheong Province, Seocheon County, the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation, and the Korea Ocean Foundation, at the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
Kia President Song Ho-sung, Oceans and Fisheries Minister Hwang Jong-woo, and South Chungcheong Governor Park Soo-hyun attended the signing ceremony.
The agreement was signed to restore the tidal flat ecosystem and expand blue carbon sinks by planting halophytes on the tidal flats in the Seocheon County area of South Chungcheong Province. Blue carbon refers to carbon absorbed by marine ecosystems such as tidal flats and coastal plants, including various fish and shellfish, seagrass, and halophytes. By 2029, the participating organizations plan to plant halophytes on approximately 168,000 square meters (about 50,000 pyeong) of tidal flats in the Jangam tidal flat area, as well as the Solli and Songnim tidal flat areas.
"This memorandum of understanding is a new cooperation model for preserving ecosystems together with businesses, the government, and local communities," Kia President Song Ho-sung said. "Kia will continue its efforts to contribute to carbon neutrality, including tidal flat vegetation restoration and blue carbon expansion, based on cooperation with various partners going forward."
