Shinsegae Group is bringing Aman, the global luxury hotel brand, to Seoul. As Chairman Chung Yong-jin accelerates the group's push into luxury, Shinsegae plans to target Korea's high-end lodging market with a mixed-use development combining a hotel, top-tier residences and a members-only club.
Shinsegae Property and Aman said on the 2nd they will develop "Aman Seoul" in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam District, Seoul. It marks Aman's first entry into Korea.
Aman Seoul will rise on the site of the former Prima Hotel at 52-3 and 52-7 Cheongdam-dong, spanning eight basement floors and 38 above-ground floors with a total floor area of about 70,000 square meters. Built around the concept of a sanctuary in the city, the complex will include a hotel, 49 branded residences, and retail and cultural facilities. An "Aman Club" with a members-only pool, fitness center and lounge will also be built.
Shinsegae Property will serve as the developer, overseeing project planning, strategy and development, while Aman will take part in architecture, design and operations. After completion, Aman will run the hotel, residences and community facilities under a long-term management contract.
"Aman Seoul goes beyond a simple hotel development and will become a new milestone for high-end lifestyle in Seoul," Chung said. "Based on our differentiated capabilities in developing spaces, we will continue to create innovative value in space."
The project also reflects the relationship between Chung and Vlad Doronin, chairman of Aman Group. In July this year, the two sides signed an agreement to establish a joint venture between Shinsegae Group and OKO Group, agreeing to cooperate on Aman Group's global hospitality development projects. Aman Seoul is the flagship project in which that partnership has taken concrete form in Korean real estate development.
"Seoul has grown into a global city where culture, design, technology and wellness come together, and it is leading global lifestyle trends," Doronin said. "By bringing together a hotel, residences and an Aman Club in the heart of Gangnam, we will create a sanctuary in the city."
Aman currently operates hotels in Tokyo, New York and Bangkok, among other cities. It is also developing new projects in Beverly Hills, Miami Beach, Dubai and Singapore. Through Aman Seoul, the brand plans to accelerate its global expansion centered on major Asian cities.
