关键理由
- 这是LG Display CTO在行业论坛上的技术路线与产品展示表述,未披露新增订单、客户定点、量产节点或收入增量。
- Tandem OLED

LG Display is tackling the runtime challenge of "on-device AI"—artificial intelligence technology running within smartphone environments—by leveraging "Tandem" organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, which stacks multiple light-emitting layers. The company aims to significantly reduce display power consumption and channel the saved power into AI computation, creating a mobile AI environment comparable to the cloud.
Choi Young-seok, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Executive Vice President of LG Display (034220.KS), said at a keynote speech during the "Display Business Forum" held at COEX in Seoul on the 21st, "As power consumption surges due to AI computation, reducing display power consumption has become a key competitive advantage in the AI era," adding, "Tandem OLED will lead display growth in the AI era." The topic of the speech was "OLED Business Expansion and the Core Structure to Drive Growth in the AI Era."
Choi said that Tandem OLED (based on a 6.7-inch panel) consumes 315 milliwatts (mW) of power, 39% less than conventional single-stack OLED. As a result, he explained, the runtime for operating on-device AI under the same conditions could increase from 2.6 hours to 3.9 hours, an increase of 1.3 hours. In effect, the display's power savings extended AI usage time by roughly half.
On-device AI processes AI computation directly within a smartphone or laptop without connecting to the cloud. It offers fast response times and is advantageous for protecting personal information. However, its weakness is that battery consumption and heat generation surge as the mobile chip—the application processor (AP)—and memory perform large-scale computations. If the display also uses substantial power, a "power bottleneck" can occur, in which the remaining battery drains rapidly the moment AI functions are turned on.
Tandem OLED is a structure that stacks two or more organic light-emitting layers in series. Unlike a single stack, which uses one light-emitting layer, it can produce the same brightness with less current, slowing the degradation of organic materials. Its lifespan is more than twice as long as conventional OLED, and its power consumption is more than 30% lower. It is a "two birds with one stone" technology that simultaneously addresses burn-in (the degradation of light-emitting elements) and power consumption while maintaining screen brightness.
Tandem OLED is regarded as a technology that expands OLED's application area beyond smartphones. Single-stack OLED was suitable for smartphones with short replacement cycles, but burn-in was an obstacle for TVs, laptops, and monitors used for long periods. LG Display overcame these limitations by applying "Tandem White (W)OLED" to large screens and "RGB (red, green, blue) Tandem OLED" to mobile devices.
Choi said, "LG Display has a full lineup of Tandem OLED covering all areas from large to small and medium-sized," adding, "We will lead global display competitiveness by meeting the demands of the low-power, high-efficiency AI era."
LG Display will showcase its TV, IT, mobile, and automotive Tandem OLED products in one place during "K-Display 2026," to be held at COEX in Seoul from the 22nd to the 24th.
