SYDNEY -- Daiwa Corporate Investment, a subsidiary of Japan's Daiwa Securities Group, will partner with an Australian venture capital firm to launch a fund that invests in leading Australian companies in such fields as quantum technology and food tech.
The Sakura Fund will be established together with Main Sequence, a VC firm affiliated with Australia's government. The goal is to raise up to 200 million Australian dollars ($143 million) this year from Japanese and Australian companies, pension funds and financial institutions, and begin investing in the first half of 2027.
The fund, the first opened in Australia by Daiwa Corporate Investment, will invest mainly in startups backed by Main Sequence that are in the Series B stage. Target industries include space, decarbonization, quantum technology, artificial intelligence and healthcare.
Australia possesses strong research capabilities, exemplified by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), a national agency that developed Wi-Fi technologies. But the country is seen as less adept at turning such technologies into products and services, and companies face challenges securing the long-term capital needed for commercialization.
The Sakura Fund will connect Australian technology companies with Japanese businesses carrying expertise in financing and commercialization.
Many technologies developed by Australian companies overlap with the 17 strategic sectors designated as core parts of Japan's growth strategy. As these companies expand through the fund, Japanese firms will gain opportunities to jointly develop and apply these technologies, as well as collaborate on manufacturing and sales.
Main Sequence was established by CSIRO in 2017. Its portfolio includes Q-CTRL, a quantum technology company developing navigation systems that can function without GPS; plant-based meat producer v2food, in which Japanese food maker Ajinomoto has a stake; and Gilmour Space Technologies, a rocket developer that launches satellites and other payloads.
Japan and Australia are deepening cooperation toward a shared industrial base, including Canberra's decision to adopt frigates based on Japan's Mogami-class design for its navy. Tokyo considers Canberra a "quasi-ally" and a key partner among like-minded nations.
