LG Innotek will supply automotive camera modules for robotaxis made by Zoox, Amazon's autonomous driving subsidiary. The company plans to continue supplying the modules for several years as Zoox expands its robotaxi service.
LG Innotek said on Aug. 27 that it supplies 5-megapixel automotive camera modules for Zoox robotaxis. Multiple camera modules are installed across each vehicle.
The camera modules use different fields of view depending on their mounting positions, enabling precise 360-degree sensing around the vehicle while minimizing blind spots. LG Innotek also enhanced durability to account for robotaxis' exposure to outdoor conditions. The cameras maintain performance through wide temperature fluctuations and are waterproof, enabling stable sensing even in harsh environments.
LG Innotek has worked with Zoox since the early stages of its robotaxi development. Building on that partnership, the company will continue supplying camera modules for the next several years.
Zoox, an autonomous driving technology company, was founded in 2014 and acquired by Amazon in 2020. In September last year, it launched a robotaxi ride-hailing service for the public in Las Vegas. It was the first fully driverless ride-hailing service using a purpose-built robotaxi.
Zoox is also expanding production capacity. The company built a robotaxi production facility in Hayward, California, last year. At full scale, the facility can assemble more than 10,000 robotaxis annually. Zoox plans to expand its service beyond Las Vegas to major U.S. cities including San Francisco.
