Automaker Kia Corp (000270.KS) and its South Korean labour union reached a tentative wage agreement on Tuesday, Yonhap News Agency reported, averting planned partial strikes that had been scheduled to begin on Wednesday.
The tentative agreement would be put to a vote of union members, Yonhap reported. Partial strikes had been planned for August 26-28, but the plan would be withdrawn if the deal is approved.
South Korea's Kia did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment sent outside usual business hours by email.
Under the tentative agreement, Kia workers would receive a 100,000-won increase in monthly base pay and a performance-related incentive package worth 400% of monthly wages plus 12.7 million won, according to Yonhap.
The union had approved plans on August 21 to stage partial strikes from August 26, but decided to withdraw the action after reaching the tentative agreement with management a day before the planned walkout, the report added.
A Kia official told Yonhap that management and the union were able to reach the tentative agreement after sharing the view that employees should be rewarded for the company's record production and sales performance last year despite a challenging business environment, while maintaining Kia's growth momentum remained a common priority.
The agreement comes after Hyundai Motor's (005380.KS) South Korean union reached a tentative wage deal with management earlier on Tuesday, averting further production losses after its lengthiest strike action in a decade.
