LG Energy Solution Ltd. said it aims to increase the share of recycled battery materials by more than 20% by 2031 from current levels, formally disclosing the target for the first time as it strengthens compliance with tightening regulations on recycled content in the European Union (EU).
The goal was included in the company’s 2025 ESG report published on June 29. LG Energy Solution said, “There is a limit to meeting regulatory requirements for recycled metals using only recovery from manufacturing scrap,” adding that it plans to expand the use of recycled metals by more than 20% compared with current levels over the medium to long term. Manufacturing scrap refers to defective products and byproducts generated during battery production.
August 2031 marks the enforcement timeline under the EU Battery Regulation, which mandates the use of recycled materials in electric vehicle batteries. Manufacturers supplying batteries to the European market must use at least 16% recycled cobalt, 6% lithium, and 6% nickel recovered from waste batteries. The requirements become stricter in August 2036, rising to 26% cobalt, 12% lithium, and 15% nickel.
LG Energy Solution has also strengthened its organizational structure for recycling. Previously, its recycling operations were managed under a single structure within the Corporate Strategy Office (CSO). Since last year, the company has shifted to a dual structure by assigning a “Recycle Sourcing Team” under the Metal Business unit within the Procurement Center and establishing a separate recycling cathode development organization under the CTO’s Advanced Development Group. The restructuring separates raw material sourcing and cathode technology development to improve specialization.
Current Status of LG Energy Solution's Battery Recycling Organizational Restructuring
The company is also accelerating supply chain development. In December last year, LG Energy Solution established a recycling joint venture, “EV-LOOP,” with France-based Derichebourg, marking the first battery recycling JV between Korean and European companies. The facility aims to begin operations in 2028 with the capacity to process more than 20,000 tons of used batteries and manufacturing scrap annually. In May of the same year, the company signed an agreement with Toyota Tsusho to establish another JV, Green Metals Battery Innovations, LLC (GMBI), in North Carolina in the United States. Both ventures will operate as pre-processing plants that shred and crush end-of-life batteries into intermediate material known as black mass, from which key metals such as cobalt, lithium, and nickel are extracted for reuse in battery production.
As of the end of last year, LG Energy Solution’s global renewable energy usage rate stood at 56%. The company is pursuing its RE100 target of using 100% renewable electricity by 2030 through solar installations, renewable energy certificates (RECs), and green tariff programs. It has also raised its NMP (N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) solvent recycling rate used in cathode production from 80% to 97% and expanded the technology from its Nanjing plant in China to facilities in Ochang, South Korea, and Poland.
LG Energy Solution appointed outside director Park Jin-kyu as chair of the board following approval at this year’s shareholders’ meeting and board resolution. It is the first time in the company’s history that an outside director has served as board chair. While the separation of CEO and chair roles had already been maintained, the move is aimed at strengthening independent oversight of management.
The company also established a new “ESG Information Management and Disclosure Regulation” in response to upcoming regulatory requirements, including the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which will begin applying to its Poland subsidiary in 2028, and Korea’s planned Sustainability Standards Board (KSSB) disclosure framework.
