TOKYO -- EmotionX, a startup spawned by Japanese memory chip maker Kioxia Holdings, will offer a full-scale cloud service that allows encrypted data to be analyzed without being decrypted.
Known as fully homomorphic encryption, the next-generation technology enables encrypted data to be analyzed on the cloud and reduces the risk of confidential information being compromised, according to the developer.
It enables companies and government agencies to pool their data and collaborate, a process known as secure multi-party computation.
Potential users of this service include defense contractors and financial institutions.
Tokyo-based EmotionX will begin offering the service later this year to a limited number of clients. Next year, the startup plans to start up dedicated servers at a data center in the northern Japanese city of Ishikari. The new infrastructure will expand computing capacity more than 50-fold.
Established in June 2025, EmotionX originated in Kioxia's internal research and development program. This March, EmotionX announced it had received an investment from Kioxia.
Transmitting data encrypted with EmotionX's technology may require thousands of times more capacity compared to unencrypted data. The spread of encrypted computing could lead to increased demand for Kioxia's memory chips.
