TOKYO -- MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings is considering expanding into the European reinsurance brokerage business, John Fitzgerald, CEO of U.S. unit MS Transverse, told Nikkei, as the Japanese insurer eyes overseas markets as a growth driver.
MS Transverse is a fronting carrier that serves as a link between insurance contracts held by managing general agents (MGAs), which review premiums and coverage details on behalf of insurers, and reinsurance companies.
MGAs specialize in reviewing contracts for specific fields, such as transportation or medical insurance. They use their expertise to precisely set premiums for complex risks, as well as to advise policyholders on preventing losses.
MS Transverse has grown by meeting the needs of both MGAs seeking reinsurance and reinsurers seeking to underwrite profitable contracts. It also advises MGAs on underwriting reviews.
The company's premiums have ballooned sixfold in three years to about $3 billion, ranking second in the U.S. It aims to leverage the network of reinsurance partners and support system for MGAs it has built in the U.S. to expand in the U.K. and elsewhere in Europe.
Europe's MGA market grew 15% last year to $23 billion, outpacing the overall global rise of 10%, U.K.-based Howden Re reports.
MGA clients that MS Transverse works with in the U.S. "are expanding in Europe," Fitzgerald said. "We were already getting requests from clients to support them in those locations."
Japan's MGA and fronting markets remain relatively underdeveloped.
"I do see an opportunity for a similar approach that we've taken in the U.S. with the underwriting expertise, specialist expertise, to improve loss outcomes for policyholders, potentially, in Japan," Fitzgerald said.
