Samsung Heavy Industries (010140.KS) has begun full-scale development of a Floating Small Modular Reactor (FSMR) nuclear power plant, for which it completed conceptual design last year. FSMR is drawing attention as next-generation offshore energy infrastructure.
Samsung Heavy Industries said on the 22nd that it signed a mutual priority cooperation memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Sargent & Lundy (S&L), a US nuclear power design and engineering firm, on the 21st to develop a universal FSMR standard platform.
Founded in 1891, S&L is a global company that has led the design and engineering of global nuclear power projects for more than 70 years. It was also selected as a leading company in the nuclear power plant sector in the "2026 Top Design Firms Sourcebook" published by the industry trade journal ENR.
The agreement targets global markets, including the United States. The two companies plan to join forces to advance the FSMR project, for which Samsung Heavy Industries has completed conceptual design, to the actual commercial deployment stage.
Samsung Heavy Industries and S&L will develop an "FSMR standard platform" that is not limited to a specific reactor type. Through this, they plan to build versatility that allows various types of reactors to be installed, providing flexible options for shipowners and customers.
In addition, to visualize the commercial deployment of the FSMR standard platform early, the two companies agreed to cooperate at key stages of commercialization, including development, licensing support, construction planning, and sea-area deployment strategy.
Samsung Heavy Industries explained that this cooperation is expected to establish a bridgehead for entering the offshore nuclear power market by combining Samsung Heavy Industries' proven offshore plant engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) capabilities with S&L's nuclear power design and engineering expertise.
Seven Sulka, Chief Nuclear Officer at S&L, said, "This cooperation will be an important step forward for the future clean energy of the United States. We expect it to accelerate the development of FSMR tailored to the US market and provide power operators, coastal states, and federal agencies with a flexible pathway for adopting nuclear power."
Kim Kyung-hee, head of Samsung Heavy Industries' Future Business Division, stressed, "Cooperation with S&L, a leader in global nuclear power design and engineering, will be a milestone that elevates our FSMR technology to the next level. We will accelerate the advancement of FSMR technology, our next-generation growth engine, and lead the global offshore nuclear power market."
