LS ELECTRIC (010120.KS) is teaming up with KEPCO to jointly develop grid-forming technology for distribution networks, aiming to secure the stability of power distribution systems that have grown more important as renewable energy expands.
LS ELECTRIC said on the 15th that it signed a memorandum of understanding with KEPCO on cooperation in distribution-level power electronics technology at LS Tower in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, on the 14th.
Under the agreement, the two companies will jointly pursue research, development and demonstration across distribution-level power electronics technology. Key areas of cooperation include grid-forming technology to support distribution networks, next-generation smart transformers, and grid-connected microgrid technology featuring black start capability.
Grid-forming technology for distribution networks, the central task of the partnership, helps inverter-based distributed energy resources such as solar power, wind power and energy storage systems establish grid voltage and frequency on their own. Unlike the grid-following approach, in which such resources passively track the voltage and frequency of the existing grid, distributed resources set the reference themselves, easing volatility in distribution networks and supporting stable grid operation.
Grid-forming technology for distribution networks remains at an early stage of commercialization worldwide. The two companies plan to move toward joint commercialization for export after completing the joint research and demonstration in South Korea.
The partners will also conduct parallel research on smart transformers, which combine digital communications to monitor and control grid conditions in real time, and on black start-based microgrid technology that can quickly restart the grid using its own emergency power source in the event of a large-scale blackout.
"As inverter-based distributed energy resources increase sharply, grid-forming technology for distribution networks, which sets its own reference and stabilizes the power grid, is becoming more important by the day," an LS ELECTRIC official said. "By combining LS ELECTRIC's power equipment and power conversion solutions with the distribution system research capabilities of KEPCO Research Institute, we will secure distribution network technology optimized for a distributed energy environment, take an early lead in the global market and further strengthen the export competitiveness of Korea's power technology."
