TOKYO -- The Japanese unit of Dutch semiconductor equipment company ASML plans to increase its domestic workforce to around 700 employees from 500 by 2030 as it supports advanced chip production in the country, ASML Japan President Shojiro Fujiwara said at a press conference on Thursday.
The company will expand support operations for clients such as Rapidus, which plans to begin Japan's first mass production of cutting-edge 2-nanometer semiconductors in fiscal 2027.
In 2024, ASML established an office with about 25 employees in the Hokkaido city of Chitose, near where Rapidus has its production facility. The workforce has grown to about 50, and the company plans further increases there.
ASML also is considering expanding operations in southern Kumamoto prefecture ahead of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. completing its second plant as well as future mass production of next-generation chips by a joint venture between Sony Group and TSMC. The company aims to bolster customer support by locating staff closer to clients.
ASML controls about 90% of the global market for lithography systems, a core technology in semiconductor production. It is the sole supplier of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines used to produce advanced chips. EUV systems, which cost tens of millions of dollars, are complex and require specialized personnel for installation and maintenance.
ASML's lithography system sales in Japan rose roughly 40% in 2025, totaling 1.2 billion euros ($1.4 billion). In addition to Rapidus and TSMC, U.S. chipmaker Micron Technology is deploying ASML equipment at its plant in Hiroshima prefecture.
Japan "is not just a sales market, but an important market that supports technological innovation and supply chains," Fujiwara said. He emphasized that ASML intends to deepen collaboration with Japanese materials manufacturers and research institutions as well as continue investing in growth opportunities in the country.
