Kia recorded its best-ever monthly U.S. sales in August, while Hyundai Motor, including its Genesis luxury brand, slipped 1.9% from a year earlier.
Kia (000270) said on the 2nd that it sold 83,793 vehicles in the U.S. last month, up 0.9% from a year earlier and the highest monthly total since the company entered the market.
The Sportage was the top seller at 18,723 units, followed by the K4 at 12,881 and the Telluride at 12,693.
The Carnival and the Seltos also supported the results, with sales of 7,389 and 9,214 units, up 13.3% and 65.3% respectively from a year earlier.
Kia's sales for the January-August period totaled 590,377 units, up 3% from the same period a year earlier and also a record high.
"The Telluride continues its sales growth," said Eric Watson, vice president of sales operations at Kia America. "With the full launch of the all-electric EV3, that momentum will carry through 2027."
Hyundai Motor sold 94,612 vehicles, down 1.9% from a year earlier. Genesis accounted for 7,635 of that total, a decline of 3.7%.

Hyundai Motor sold 29,741 of those vehicles, up 1.1%, while Kia sold 27,994, up 36.1%. Eco-friendly models accounted for 32.4% of total sales.
Hybrids drove much of the gain. Hybrid sales surged 47.7% to 50,057 units, also a record high. Hyundai Motor sold 25,109 hybrids, up 33.0%, and Kia sold 24,948, up 65.7%.
Electric vehicle sales, by contrast, fell 52.3% to 7,678 units. Hyundai Motor sold 4,632, down 56.3%, and Kia sold 3,046, down 44.7%.
Results at major rivals in the U.S. were mixed in August. Toyota sold 215,556 vehicles and Mazda 34,735, down 4.4% and 8.9% respectively. Honda sold 133,996 units, up 1.0%, and Subaru 60,428, up 1.3%.
