The KOSDAQ index rose 3% to break past the 770 level. As concerns over an artificial intelligence (AI) peak-out eased further, large-cap semiconductor stocks have been driving the KOSPI higher, while the KOSDAQ is being led by biotech names. The move is interpreted as the result of stronger gains in stocks such as top stock Alteogen, along with ABL Bio, PharmaResearch, HLB and LigaChem Bio, outpacing semiconductor stocks including Wonik IPS, Leeno Industrial and PSK.
According to the Korea Exchange on the 23rd, the KOSDAQ index was trading at 778.15 points as of 1:20 p.m., up 3.60% from the previous trading day. After opening at 762.19, up 11.10 points (1.48%) from the prior session, the KOSDAQ extended its gains, touching 780.37 points during the session. The KOSDAQ had been hovering below the 770 level ever since it closed at 791.84 points on the 16th of this month.
The KOSDAQ's rally was led mainly by biotech stocks. Top stock Alteogen was changing hands at 294,500 won, up 26,500 won (9.89%) from the previous session. Gains among other large-cap biotech stocks were also pronounced. Led by PharmaResearch (12.56%), stocks including LigaChem Bio (6.82%), ABL Bio (5.62%), HLB (3.89%) and Samchundang Pharm (3.80%) all posted strong gains.
The picture appears somewhat different from the KOSPI. After Alphabet said it would expand its AI-related capital expenditure guidance, concerns over a semiconductor peak-out subsided, and the KOSPI is up more than 3% on the back of gains in stocks such as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. By contrast, among KOSDAQ semiconductor stocks, Jusung Engineering (-1.11%), PSK (-1.91%) and TES (-4.03%) were declining, while Wonik IPS (1.43%), Leeno Industrial (1.25%), Simmtech (0.31%) and FADU (1.85%) posted gains of around 1%. This is seen as the effect of some bargain-hunting demand flowing in as recent declines in biotech stocks came into focus.
