Mirae Asset Global Investments said that assets under management (AUM) at Global X Japan, its Japanese exchange-traded fund (ETF) management subsidiary, have surpassed 1 trillion yen.
According to Mirae Asset on the 13th, Global X Japan's total AUM stood at 1.14 trillion yen as of the end of last month. This is equivalent to about $7 billion (approximately 10.9 trillion won). The company said the growth has continued with steady inflows even after AUM first exceeded 1 trillion yen on May 22 this year.
Founded in 2019, Global X Japan is Japan's first ETF-specialized management firm. It has grown rapidly in the Japanese ETF market by continuously introducing innovative products in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and covered calls. Over the past three years, its AUM has increased about 7.5-fold, recording a three-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 89.7%.
The growth is attributed to a "killer product" strategy that proactively reflected changing investor demand, along with a sales strategy leveraging diverse distribution channels. Since launching its first ETF in 2020, Global X Japan has listed an average of 12 new ETFs per year, building a lineup of 71 products as of the end of last month. It has expanded its investor base centered on differentiated thematic ETFs and income-type ETFs.
Its flagship products, the "Global X Japan Global Leaders ESG ETF" and the "Global X NASDAQ 100 Daily Covered Call ETF," invest in Japanese exporters and the broader semiconductor value chain, respectively, and have established themselves as major growth drivers. Recently, it introduced the "Global X NASDAQ 100 Daily Covered Call ETF," which invests in the "TIGER US NASDAQ 100 Target Daily Covered Call ETF," to the Japanese market. This marks the first case of a fund-of-funds product launched overseas based on a TIGER product. It sold about 14 billion won on its first day of listing and surpassed $200 million in net assets about two months after listing.
The expansion of ETF investment demand centered on online brokerages, following the implementation of Japan's new NISA system in 2024, is also seen as having contributed to the growth. While total net inflows into Japan's overall ETF market this year were tallied at about $2.7 billion, Global X Japan alone recorded about $1.5 billion in net inflows, expanding its presence in the market.
Backed by such growth, Global X Japan recently achieved its first annual profit since its founding, based on the Japanese fiscal year. Seiji Nakata, chairman of Daiwa Securities Group, said, "The establishment of Global X Japan came from the decision of Chairman Park Hyeon-joo and Mirae Asset, who noted the potential of the Japanese ETF market ahead of others and proposed collaboration." He added, "AUM of 1 trillion yen is a milestone, and we hope it will grow into an asset management firm that represents the Japanese ETF market going forward."
Kim Young-hwan, president and head of the Global Business Division at Mirae Asset Global Investments, stressed, "Global X Japan's growth is a representative case of combining Mirae Asset's differentiated product philosophy with Daiwa Securities Group's know-how in the Japanese market." He added, "We will continue to introduce differentiated killer products by combining local expertise in each region across the globe with Mirae Asset's ETF capabilities."
Meanwhile, Mirae Asset operates its ETF business in 18 regions worldwide, including Korea, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, and Europe. As of the end of May this year, its global ETF AUM stood at 428 trillion won, ranking 11th among global ETF managers.
