韩国财政部称SK海力士ADR资金流入和出口商结汇推动韩元企稳

Hur Jang, Second Vice Minister of Economy and Finance, said the foreign exchange market is maintaining its stabilizing trend, citing inflows from SK hynix's (000660.KS) ADR (American Depositary Receipt) issuance, forward exchange sales by shipbuilders, and expanded nego sales (selling of export proceeds in dollars) by major exporters as factors behind the recent decline in the won-dollar exchange rate.
According to the Ministry of Economy and Finance on the 22nd, Hur held a meeting the previous day at the Seoul Government Complex with major exporters including Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), SK hynix, Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) and Kia (000270.KS), HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, Hanwha Ocean (042660.KS), and Samsung Heavy Industries, to discuss recent foreign exchange transaction conditions and measures to stabilize the currency market.
Hur explained that the won-dollar exchange rate had risen to the 1,550 range just before the June meeting with exporters this year, but recently fell rapidly to the late 1,400s. "Thanks to expanded nego sales by exporters, forward exchange sales by shipbuilders, and inflows from SK hynix's ADR issuance, the supply-demand concentration in the foreign exchange market has eased somewhat," he said. "Dollar buying by offshore investors who had bet on won weakness also appears to have calmed down to some extent."
Hur projected that foreign currency supply-and-demand conditions would improve further in the second half on the back of strong semiconductor exports. He also raised this year's current account surplus forecast to $290 billion from the previous $135 billion. This far exceeds the record surplus of $123.1 billion recorded last year.
However, he stressed that firmly establishing market stability is important, as external variables such as geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East still remain. "The government has secured sufficient capacity to respond in order to stabilize the foreign exchange market," Hur said. "I ask major exporters to also expand the conversion of export proceeds and foreign currency deposits in consideration of the changed foreign exchange market conditions, and to play an active role in bringing overseas retained funds into the country."
Participating companies agreed that foreign exchange market stability is essential to reducing uncertainty in investment and business conditions, and pledged to actively cooperate with the government's efforts to stabilize the foreign exchange market so that the recent trend of improving foreign currency supply and demand can continue stably.
