TOKYO -- Nissan Motor will retain the capacity to produce 1 million vehicles in Japan after a plant closure by transferring production among remaining facilities.
The Japanese automaker announced Thursday that minivan production at two factories in Fukuoka prefecture will be moved to its Tochigi prefecture plant over a period of two to three years.
Nissan's Oppama plant in Kanagawa prefecture will cease operations at the end of fiscal 2027, part of the automaker's plant closure and restructuring plan involving seven vehicle assembly sites worldwide.
The closure of Oppama will shrink Nissan's domestic production capacity to roughly 800,000 units. Including production outsourced to Mitsubishi Motors, the company's domestic capacity will remain at roughly 1 million vehicles.
The Serena midsize minivan is currently manufactured at its Nissan Motor Kyushu subsidiary in Fukuoka prefecture. The Elgrand luxury minivan is produced at another Fukuoka unit, Nissan Shatai Kyushu.
Production of both the Serena and the Elgrand will be relocated to the Tochigi plant. The facility will also produce the Skyline sports car, scheduled for release this winter, as well as the Leaf and other electric vehicles.
The capacity transfers will have no impact on employment, according to Nissan. Nissan Motor Kyushu will continue to make the X-Trail sport utility vehicle, known as the Rogue in the U.S. market. The unit will also take over production from Oppama of the Note subcompact and the Kicks SUV, among other vehicles.
Nissan Shatai Kyushu will continue making large-frame vehicles, such as the Patrol SUV, which is in strong demand in the Middle East.
The Tochigi plant's operating rate was estimated at 15% in 2025, according to MarkLines. This compares poorly to Nissan Motor Kyushu's 61% rate that year. The moves will boost the utilization rate of the Tochigi facility.
Nissan Shatai Kyushu is operating at 109% capacity, due to the brisk Patrol exports. The subsidiary switched from a two-shift system to a round-the-clock three-shift structure at the end of 2025.
With the Fukuoka plants facing further strain after capacity from Oppama is transferred there, minivan production will be consolidated at Tochigi to level out the lopsided utilization rates.
Under Nissan's recently announced product family strategy, multiple models that share basic structures and components will be developed in concert with each other. The company's Canton plant in the U.S. state of Mississippi is slated to be the production hub for the large-frame family of vehicles.
Nissan Motor Kyushu is positioned as a production hub for the compact vehicle series. With one more product family yet to be announced, the goal is to cover 80% of global sales under the three categories.
While Nissan plans to maintain production capacity for 1 million vehicles, its domestic production volume was roughly 700,000 units in the previous fiscal year, including production handled by Mitsubishi. Production volume exceeded 1 million vehicles in fiscal 2016, but the number has been sluggish in recent years.
