NHN's artificial intelligence (AI) Go program "HanDol" was provided for joint training of athletes from both countries at a youth sports exchange between Korea and China.
NHN (181710) said on the 23rd that it provided HanDol for the joint training of the Go event at the "19th Korea-China Youth Sports Exchange" held in Iksan, North Jeolla Province. The Korea-China Youth Sports Exchange, hosted by the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, is an international exchange program in which middle school students from Korea and China build friendship through sports. It has been held annually since 2008 in three events, including basketball, table tennis, and badminton, and this year the Go event was added for the first time. This reflects the fact that Go is a mind sport that both countries have developed together over many years.
At the Go event joint training held on the 21st, a total of 12 people participated, including six students and instructors from each country's Go event. The training was conducted in two formats: the "HanDol Challenge," in which participants play against a professional-level AI, and the amateur-level "HanDol Level Test," in which participants choose a stage matching their skill level among nine levels. After completing the joint training, students from both countries held practice matches on the 22nd and official matches on the 23rd.
HanDol is an AI Go program developed in-house by NHN. It is based on the vast user game record data accumulated through "Hangame Baduk" since 1999. In 2019, it was chosen as the opponent for Lee Sedol's retirement match, winning two out of three games. Since then, it has been continuously advanced by incorporating research achievements in various reading algorithms and repeated learning.
Sim Hyo-jun, a Korean student who participated in the training, said, "HanDol AI was much stronger than I thought," adding, "I can compete against various skill levels and identify my weaknesses, so I will continue to use it." Wang You-song, a Chinese participating student, said, "I would like to recommend HanDol AI to my friends," and added, "Through this exchange, it was meaningful to be able to study and learn together with friends from China and Korea."
