Five students from Seoul Science High School all won gold medals at the International Physics Olympiad, where science prodigies from around the world compete. South Korea's national physics team, made up of students from Korean Minjok Leadership Academy and Gyeonggi Science High School, also took first place at the International Young Physicists' Tournament, a competition among nations.
According to the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity on the 14th, students Kim Mu-yeon, Oh Ju-ha, Lee Kwon-heon, Lee Seung-jun, and Jeong Min-kwon (all third-year students at Seoul Science High School) each won a gold medal at the 56th International Physics Olympiad, held in Colombia from the 4th to the 12th of this month. It was the first time since 2023, four years ago, that all five members of the Korean delegation received gold medals. Oh Ju-ha ranked first overall among the competition's participants.
At this Olympiad, the theory exam and the experimental exam each ran for five hours. This year's theory exam featured three problems: the principle of low-temperature cooling using magnetic materials, the principle of light concentration and solar cookers, and topics covering hydrogen, electron-positron, and ozone decomposition. The experimental exam dealt with measuring vapor pressure and thermal conductivity, and was reported to have comprehensively assessed scientific analysis skills and experimental performance ability.
The International Physics Olympiad began in Warsaw, Poland, in 1967 and was created to discover young people with an interest and talent in physics. Held each July on a rotating basis among participating countries, this competition drew 381 students from a total of 91 countries. Shin Yong-il, chairman of the Korean Physics Olympiad Committee of the Korean Physical Society, who led the Korean delegation, said, "I am very pleased that the entire Korean delegation achieved the outstanding result of winning gold medals," adding, "I sincerely hope they will further develop their dreams and capabilities for science and grow into talents who will lead the future."
The Korean delegation that competed in the International Young Physicists' Tournament also won gold medals. The International Young Physicists' Tournament is a physics debate competition conducted in national teams. The Korean team, composed of Kim Dong-ha (third-year, Korean Minjok Leadership Academy), Kim Seung-hyun (12th grade, North London Collegiate School Jeju), Kim Han-seo (third-year, Gyeonggi Science High School), Won Jae-hyun (third-year, Korean Minjok Leadership Academy), and Choi Si-woo (third-year, Gyeonggi Science High School), took the championship at the competition held in Zurich, Switzerland, from the 5th to the 12th of this month. The Korean team held debate battles with delegations from 10 countries including New Zealand, Austria, and Greece, on phenomena such as an object thrown into the air suddenly changing its axis of rotation, and the motion of a coin sinking into a liquid as it wobbles and falls like a leaf. Chung Woo-sung, chairman of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity, said, "The government and businesses are working together to cultivate excellent talent," adding, "We expect that more science prodigies will create new opportunities going forward."
