LIG Defense & Aerospace (LIG D&A) is starting full-scale development of an "unmanned water rescue vessel" designed to protect the safety of firefighters.
LIG D&A said on the 27th that it has been selected as the lead research and development organization for a civil-military technology cooperation project overseen by the Institute of Civil-Military Technology Cooperation. The project is part of a policy to expand civil-military technology cooperation pursued by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration and the National Fire Agency.
LIG D&A plans to apply military unmanned technology to the disaster response field, establishing a foundation for the safety of not only the public but also rescue personnel.
Water rescue sites often pose complex risk factors such as rapid currents and low visibility, frequently threatening the safety of rescue workers as well as those being rescued. The unmanned surface vessel to be developed by LIG D&A will be deployed to high-risk areas amid severe weather, assessing situations in real time and leading initial responses.
LIG D&A plans to develop an unmanned surface vessel optimized for water rescue missions by consolidating autonomous navigation, obstacle avoidance, remote command and control, and sensor integration technologies that have already been proven through the development of military unmanned surface vessels. In particular, the company will operate a "field-centered development process," visiting water rescue teams under the National Fire Agency directly from before the design stage to hear about actual rescue environments and operational difficulties.
LIG D&A plans to use this project as an opportunity to expand its business into maritime unmanned systems overall. The company has accumulated related technology by developing the "Haegeom" series of unmanned surface vessels as a civil-military project since 2015, and it plans to deliver and deploy to the Navy the first unmanned surface vessel in Korea to receive a combat-suitability assessment through "reconnaissance unmanned surface vessel system development" by 2027. Based on its track record secured domestically, the company plans to actively pursue overseas exports targeting countries such as those in Southeast Asia and the Middle East that lack rescue infrastructure relative to their level of maritime activity.
"This project secures safety at dangerous rescue sites and, at the same time, marks a significant starting point for LIG D&A's unmanned surface vessels to expand into the civilian sector," said Shin Yong-hwa, head of the Future Battlefield Business Division. "Based on our accumulated advanced technological capabilities, we will continue to expand our business into the global market beyond the domestic market."
