Mid-sized automation equipment maker Toptec is increasingly likely to supply additional battery pack automation equipment to Hyundai Mobis. If the order is confirmed, Toptec would secure new business in Europe after winning equipment orders in the US last month for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs).
Hyundai Mobis is increasing investment in battery production equipment at home and abroad as it expands its electrified vehicle business, deepening its partnership with Toptec. Toptec has expanded its position as a key supplier since winning its first battery system assembly line order from Hyundai Mobis in 2023.
Hyundai Mobis plans to expand battery production equipment at its Czech plant, according to industry sources on Sept. 4. The expansion will target an existing Battery System Assembly (BSA) line for electric vehicles. Industry officials expect Toptec to be a leading candidate to supply the related automation equipment.
The contract is expected to be worth tens of billions of won. Toptec won a 33.4 billion won battery system assembly line order from Hyundai Mobis in 2023. Last month, it signed separate contracts with Hyundai Mobis’s North American electrification unit to supply a 20.1 billion won cylindrical HEV battery assembly line and a 21.1 billion won prismatic EREV battery assembly line. The Czech project is expected to be similar in size to the existing contracts, at around 20 billion won to 30 billion won.
Including the Czech project, Toptec’s recent battery equipment orders from Hyundai Mobis are estimated to exceed 60 billion won. The amount is expected to increase further as Hyundai Mobis plans additional investment in battery equipment in the US. If Toptec also secures follow-on projects, its battery equipment orders from Hyundai Mobis could exceed 100 billion won, equivalent to about 60% of Toptec’s total revenue of 171 billion won last year.
Battery equipment cooperation between Toptec and Hyundai Mobis is expected to expand further. Toptec was named an outstanding supplier at Hyundai Mobis’s “2025 Partners Day” last year.
Battery pack assembly methods and designs vary depending on cell type and vehicle, requiring tailored automation equipment. Toptec has secured equipment technologies capable of handling the major battery form factors used by Hyundai Mobis. It has broadened its capabilities by supplying production equipment for different battery form factors, including cylindrical, prismatic and pouch cells.
Toptec is also expanding the scope of its battery equipment business. Since entering the sector in 2019 by supplying battery module assembly equipment to SK On, it has expanded from module and pack automation lines into cell assembly equipment. Its customer base has also expanded from Korean battery and component companies to overseas automakers. In April, Toptec won an order worth about 13 billion won from a major Indian automaker group for pouch-type battery module and pack assembly equipment.
The increase in battery equipment orders is also expected to contribute to a recovery in Toptec’s earnings. Its order backlog stood at 158.2 billion won as of the end of June. Consolidated revenue in the first half rose 3.2% to 73.5 billion won from 71.2 billion won a year earlier. Its operating loss narrowed to 500 million won from 6.8 billion won over the same period.
