EcoPro BM, Soulbrain and Aekyung Chemical will jointly develop core materials for sodium-ion batteries. They plan to bundle cathode materials, electrolyte and hard carbon anode material into a single materials package and supply it to battery makers and automakers.
EcoPro BM said on July 26 that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Soulbrain and Aekyung Chemical at its headquarters in Ochang, North Chungcheong Province, on July 22 and launched the K-Sodium Alliance.
The three companies will develop optimal combinations of cathode materials, electrolyte and hard carbon anode material for sodium-ion batteries. They will provide the materials they develop to one another and share evaluation results. EcoPro BM will take charge of developing cathode materials and securing mass-production technology. Soulbrain will develop electrolyte and additives. Aekyung Chemical will handle the development of hard carbon anode material and mass-production technology.
Sodium-ion batteries use sodium instead of lithium as a raw material. Raw material procurement is easier and the risk of price fluctuations is lower than for lithium-ion batteries. Their low-temperature performance and safety are also relatively strong, so they are being developed as batteries for energy storage systems (ESS) and entry-level electric vehicles.
In South Korea, a supply chain spanning cathode materials, electrolyte and anode material is not yet in place. Since not only the performance of individual materials but also the combination between materials affects battery life, output and charging performance, joint development is needed for commercialization.
EcoPro BM has developed sodium-ion battery cathode materials over the past four years. It currently has a pilot production line with annual capacity of 1,000 tons. Aekyung Chemical is building a hard carbon anode material pilot line with annual capacity of 1,300 tons. It aims for completion within this year.
"Sodium-ion batteries have cost competitiveness and low-temperature performance, but it has been difficult to speed up commercialization because the domestic materials ecosystem is lacking," said Jeong Hyun-soo, head of future technology at EcoPro BM. "We will raise the competitiveness of the domestic industry based on private-sector technology cooperation."
