Bionano Genomics, Inc. (
BNGO
) announced that three independently authored, peer-reviewed studies have demonstrated that optical genome mapping (OGM) can uncover clinically significant structural genomic alterations across myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and therapy-related myeloid neoplasms— findings often missed by conventional cytogenetic methods such as karyotyping, FISH, and targeted sequencing panels.
MDS and AML are aggressive hematologic malignancies where accurate genomic risk stratification is essential for treatment planning, including decisions around allogeneic transplant and targeted therapies. Conventional cytogenetics frequently fails to detect complex structural variants, especially in cases with "normal karyotype" or insufficient dividing cells.
In a study from MD Anderson Cancer Center OGM identified Chromoanagenesis, a catastrophic genomic restructuring event—in 15.9% of MDS cases, defining an ultra-high-risk subset with a median overall survival of just 9.9 months. The findings suggest OGM may provide prognostic information beyond existing risk-stratification systems.
A separate study from the University of Oulu found that OGM detected clinically relevant structural variants in 46% of cytogenetically normal AML samples, including recurrent KMT2A partial tandem duplications, RUNX1 disruptions, NF1 deletions, and a novel FOXP1:EYA2 fusion. Patients with OGM-detected abnormalities had significantly worse overall survival.
A third study from the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute showed that OGM redefined cytogenetic classification in over half of therapy-related myeloid neoplasm cases and identified additional clinically relevant alterations in younger-onset MDS. Chromoanagenesis emerged as the strongest independent predictor of inferior survival, surpassing even TP53 mutation status.
Across all three studies, OGM was interpretable in 100% of samples - including cases where conventional banding analysis failed—and consistently identified high-risk genomic complexity that standard cytogenetic workups missed. Bionano stated that these findings reinforce the potential of OGM to enhance prognostication and inform treatment decisions in high-risk myeloid malignancies.
BNGO has traded between $1.00 and $3.45 over the past year. The stock is currently trading at $1.24, up 2.05%.
