Diageo Korea, which operates the whisky brand Johnnie Walker, is carrying out a voluntary retirement program again after about two years. As the whisky market, which grew rapidly following COVID-19, slows down, restructuring moves are continuing across the imported liquor industry.
According to industry sources on the 21st, Diageo Korea has been accepting applications for voluntary retirement since the 20th of this month. It marks about two years since the company implemented an early retirement program (ERP) in early 2024.
Those eligible for voluntary retirement will receive up to 36 months of severance pay and a special settlement payment of 20 million won, depending on years of service. However, the size of the settlement payment has been reduced from two years ago, when it was about 30 million won.
The workforce reduction is interpreted as being influenced by weak earnings. Diageo Korea's revenue for fiscal year 2025 (July 2024 to June 2025) was 160.6 billion won, down 1.6% from a year earlier, while operating profit plunged 48.4% to 9.4 billion won.
"We decided to carry out voluntary retirement in the process of reviewing our operating system to secure the sustainability of the business," a Diageo Korea official said. "We plan to continue focusing on enhancing productivity and competitiveness going forward."
The restructuring trend in the liquor industry is also continuing. Heineken Korea also recently carried out a voluntary retirement program, which reportedly drew more applicants than initially planned. The industry expects that as the consumption slowdown continues, moves by imported liquor companies to streamline their organizations will also continue for the time being.
