GC Wellbeing is entering the skin booster market through a partnership with a Japanese biotechnology company to jointly develop a next-generation human-derived collagen product.
GC Wellbeing said on the 1st that it had signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Japanese biotechnology firm JBP covering exclusive domestic commercialization of a next-generation human-derived collagen skin booster, joint global commercialization and joint research and development.
GC Wellbeing will handle exclusive commercialization in South Korea and pursue overseas expansion alongside JBP, a leading company in placenta-based products. With interest growing in skin booster products that use extracellular matrix (ECM) derived from human tissue, GC Wellbeing plans to target the premium aesthetics market with a differentiated human-derived collagen product.
The product under joint development is a human-derived collagen formulation containing a combination of collagen types I, III and V. The goal is to form a three-dimensional matrix scaffold similar in structure to skin. The companies plan in particular to develop the product to contain high-purity, high-content type III collagen, known as "baby collagen" because it is abundant in newborn skin.
The partnership grew out of a long-standing relationship and mutual trust built by GC Wellbeing and JBP through Laennec, a placenta-derived injection. Drawing on their experience commercializing Laennec and their research and production capabilities in human-derived materials, the two companies plan to broaden the scope of their cooperation into medical aesthetics.
