Jeong Jin-wan, president of Woori Bank, is moving to ease the housing cost burden for young employees who do not own homes. The aim is to boost the morale of the workers who will shape the bank's future and to secure top talent.
According to financial industry sources on the 23rd, Woori Bank is pushing to build a new dormitory for young employees at a cost of about 75 billion won. The project will create a roughly 200-room dormitory by actively utilizing idle assets in Seoul's Sillim-dong and Junghwa-dong districts.
The dormitory construction is said to have drawn Jeong's direct interest and involvement. Once completed, new bankers will be able to stay in state-of-the-art facilities. "This is aimed at lowering the housing burden for young employees and securing excellent talent," a Woori Bank official said.
Inside and outside the bank, there is talk that Jeong has a strong interest in Woori Bank's future, including its young staff. As for branches alone, the bank is currently redeveloping its Euljiro 3-ga branch in Seoul into a complex financial center. It plans to develop the site into a future financial hub in the city center that combines corporate finance, wealth management (WM), and digital finance functions.
Jeong is also accelerating the buildout of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. Woori Bank is pushing to build the 80-megawatt "Woori Financial Group Wangsuk AI Center" in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province. As the core project of the "AI Digital Universe," which involves an investment of about 850 billion won, it will establish an AI data center and an information technology (IT) operations center. A future-oriented training institute will also be built nearby.
