Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chairman Euisun Chung visited the Ashanti, a traditional kingdom in Ghana, Africa. Hyundai Motor Group operates a completely knocked down (CKD) plant in Ghana. CKD is a production method in which parts are shipped and vehicles are assembled locally.
According to local media on the 20th, Chung paid a courtesy visit to Ashanti Kingdom King Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, Ghana's second-largest city, on the 15th. Key executives, including Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chairman Chang Jae-hoon, also accompanied him. The Ashanti Kingdom is the largest single ethnic group in Ghana.
Chung presented King Otumfuo Osei Tutu II with a miniature model of the "Pony" and the autobiography of Hyundai Group founder and Honorary Chairman Chung Ju-yung. In return, the king gave him a piece of "kente," the traditional cloth of the Ashanti Kingdom.
Chung also attended a forum jointly hosted by Hyundai Motor Group and global financial firm Bank of America (BofA) at the University of Ghana in Accra, the capital of Ghana, on the 6th. The forum was attended by key figures from Ghana's government, industry and financial sectors, who discussed Africa's industrial development and investment cooperation.
In Africa, Hyundai Motor Group operates CKD plants in Egypt and Algeria in addition to Ghana. "There was no discussion of establishing a new production base at this courtesy visit to the king," a Hyundai Motor Group official said.
